OpenAI CEO Sam Altman announced on Monday that ChatGPT weekly active users have reached an astounding 800 million, reflecting rapid adoption among consumers, developers, enterprises, and governments worldwide.
During the keynote at OpenAI’s Dev Day, Altman highlighted the platform’s growth, noting that the tool now powers over 6 billion tokens per minute via its API. “Today, 4 million developers have built with OpenAI,” he said. “Thanks to all of you, AI has gone from something people play with to something people build with every day.”
ChatGPT’s user growth has been unprecedented since its launch in November 2022. The platform previously reported 500 million weekly active users at the end of March, which rose to 700 million by August — making this latest milestone of 800 million users a continuation of explosive expansion.
Driving Adoption Through Innovation
The announcement coincided with several new OpenAI initiatives, including tools for building apps inside ChatGPT and advanced agentic systems. Altman explained that these innovations will support “a new generation of apps that are interactive, adaptive, and personalized, that you can chat with.”
Additionally, OpenAI recently launched OpenAI Pulse, a proactive service that delivers customized morning briefs to users, expanding ChatGPT’s capabilities beyond reactive responses.
OpenAI’s Growth and Market Position
Despite operating under a non-profit designation, OpenAI has become the most valuable privately held company globally, with a recent private stock sale raising $6.6 billion and valuing the company at $500 billion.
The firm continues to release new products at a rapid pace, including the AI video generation tool Sora and an accompanying social app, alongside a partnership with Stripe to launch a platform for agentic commerce.
ChatGPT’s record-breaking growth underscores its transformation from an experimental AI chatbot into a widely adopted platform that developers, businesses, and governments are using to innovate across industries.
