Google is significantly expanding the reach of its NotebookLM Audio Overviews feature by adding support for 76 new languages, the company announced Tuesday. This enhancement enables a broader range of users to generate AI-powered podcast-style summaries from uploaded documents in their preferred language — a major step forward in accessibility and multilingual learning.
AI Podcast Summaries from Your Documents
NotebookLM, Google’s AI-powered research and note-taking assistant, introduced Audio Overviews last year to help users better understand dense materials, such as legal documents, course readings, or study notes, by transforming them into conversational podcasts hosted by virtual AI narrators.
With this update, more users around the world can benefit from these AI-generated summaries in a language they’re most comfortable with, making the tool ideal for educators, students, and professionals across diverse regions.
New Output Language Option
Previously, NotebookLM Audio Overviews were only generated in the account’s primary language. Now, Google is rolling out a new “Output Language” setting, which allows users to select the language of the audio output independently.
This feature is designed to support multilingual content creation. Users can now change the output language on the fly — for instance, to generate study materials in both English and Hindi, or summaries in Spanish from an English article.
“A teacher preparing a lesson on the Amazon rainforest can share resources in various languages — like a Portuguese documentary, a Spanish research paper, and English study reports — with their students,” Google wrote in a blog post. “The students can upload these and can generate an Audio Overview of key insights in their preferred language.”
Full List of Supported Languages
The expanded language support includes (but is not limited to):
- European & Asian Languages: French, German, Spanish, Italian, Russian, Chinese (Simplified & Traditional), Japanese, Korean, Hindi, Arabic
- South Asian & Regional Languages: Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Urdu, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Oriya, Punjabi, Sinhala, Maithili
- Others: Swahili, Haitian Creole, Javanese, Georgian, Armenian, Hebrew, Pashto, Turkish, Vietnamese
For the full list of supported languages, Google has included both European variants (like French [Canada] and Portuguese [Brazil]) and regional dialects, including Norwegian Bokmål and Nynorsk.
Why It Matters: Multilingual Learning & Global Accessibility
This expansion positions NotebookLM as a unique AI tool capable of assisting users with:
- Cross-lingual learning
- Creating inclusive educational materials
- Bridging the gap in AI support for underrepresented languages
Whether you’re a student studying in multiple languages or an educator managing multilingual classrooms, the enhanced NotebookLM Audio Overviews offer a versatile way to generate comprehensible audio content from written materials.
