OpenAI has taken another leap forward in AI innovation with the launch of new tools designed to help businesses and developers build AI-powered agents. These automated systems, capable of independently completing tasks, mark a significant step toward AI-driven efficiency in various industries.

OpenAI’s New AI Agent Tools: What’s Changing?

On Tuesday, OpenAI introduced the Responses API, a powerful new solution that enables businesses to create custom AI agents. These AI-driven tools can browse the web, analyze company files, and perform automated workflows—functions similar to OpenAI’s own Operator product.

The Responses API replaces the Assistants API, which OpenAI plans to phase out by mid-2026. By offering businesses greater flexibility in building their own autonomous AI applications, OpenAI is paving the way for the next generation of AI-powered business tools.

The Rising Demand for AI Agents

The concept of AI agents has gained significant traction, but many companies still struggle to create fully autonomous systems that deliver real-world value. Earlier this week, Chinese startup Butterfly Effect made headlines with its AI agent platform, Manus, which initially sparked excitement but failed to meet expectations.

This underscores the high stakes for OpenAI as it works to make AI agents not only more functional but also more reliable.

“It’s easy to showcase an AI agent,” said Olivier Godemont, OpenAI’s API product head, in an interview with TechCrunch. “Scaling an AI agent for real-world use, and making it something people rely on daily, is the real challenge.”

How OpenAI’s Responses API Works

OpenAI has already integrated AI agents into ChatGPT with features like Operator, which navigates websites for users, and Deep Research, which compiles detailed reports. However, these tools still have limitations in autonomy.

With the Responses API, OpenAI is now giving developers access to the underlying technology that powers these AI agents, allowing them to create more advanced, autonomous applications.

Key Features of the Responses API:

  • Web Search Capabilities – Uses GPT-4o search and GPT-4o mini search to browse the internet and deliver answers with cited sources.
  • File Search Functionality – Enables AI to scan and retrieve information from business databases quickly.
  • Computer-Using Agent (CUA) Model – Automates desktop tasks, simulating mouse and keyboard actions for business workflows.
  • Enterprise-Friendly Deployment – Companies can run AI agents locally for better security and performance.

How Accurate Are OpenAI’s New AI Agents?

OpenAI claims its GPT-4o search models outperform traditional AI chatbots in accuracy. According to OpenAI’s SimpleQA benchmark, which measures AI’s ability to answer fact-based questions, these models score:

  • GPT-4o search – 90% accuracy
  • GPT-4o mini search – 88% accuracy
  • GPT-4.5 (larger model) – Only 63% accuracy

While these scores are impressive, AI-powered search engines still struggle with short, navigational queries (e.g., “Lakers score today”), and ChatGPT’s citation accuracy remains a challenge.

The Future of AI Agents in Business

Alongside the Responses API, OpenAI is also launching the Agents SDK, an open-source toolkit that helps developers integrate AI models into business systems. It includes:

  • Security safeguards to prevent AI misuse.
  • Monitoring tools for debugging and optimization.
  • Multi-agent orchestration features, expanding on OpenAI’s previous Swarm framework.

While AI agents are still in their early stages, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has predicted that 2025 will be the year AI agents truly enter the workforce. With the launch of these new tools, OpenAI is shifting from flashy AI demos to real-world AI applications, making it easier for businesses to adopt next-gen automation technologies.
