PayPal Honey now integrates with ChatGPT, offering AI-powered shopping assistance, real-time deals, pricing comparisons, and personalized recommendations. PayPal is expanding its AI-driven shopping capabilities with the integration of its Honey browser extension into ChatGPT and other AI platforms. The move comes after PayPal’s recent partnership with Google on agentic commerce, signaling a bigger push into AI-assisted retail.
The new features allow users asking shopping-related questions through AI chatbots to receive Honey’s curated product recommendations, real-time pricing, merchant options, and exclusive deals directly within their conversation. Honey can even detect when AI suggestions leave out key retailers and surface those additional options to consumers.
“Our goal is to help shoppers compare prices more efficiently while providing merchants with personalized offers to drive sales,” PayPal said. The integrations are designed to be AI-agnostic, but ChatGPT is the first platform to receive support, with other AI services planned for the future.
The update is part of PayPal’s broader rollout of agentic commerce initiatives, including the Google collaboration, an agentic commerce offering, a remote MCP server, and an Agent Toolkit. Additional initiatives include free trials of Perplexity’s premium service and access to PayPal’s new Comet browser.
However, PayPal is entering a competitive AI landscape. OpenAI recently unveiled its own agentic shopping system, which features an “Instant Checkout” and currently supports Etsy, with Shopify merchants to follow. The shift toward AI-based shopping assistants could move consumers away from traditional e-commerce platforms like Amazon and Google, creating new opportunities and challenges for services like Honey.
The AI enhancements arrive after Honey faced criticism over influencer payouts. A YouTuber accused the company of taking credit for sales driven by creators, prompting multiple lawsuits and negative press. Despite this, PayPal remains committed to using AI to simplify online shopping and enhance consumer experiences.
