Cognitive Map

« Back to Glossary Index

A Cognitive Map is a mental representation, sometimes referred to as a “mental palace,” that helps an individual acquire, store, recall, and interpret information about the relative locations and characteristics of objects or phenomena in their environment. It allows people to navigate, make decisions, and understand spatial relationships.

Cognitive maps are often used to represent both physical spaces, like navigating a city, and abstract concepts, such as mapping out ideas or relationships between different pieces of information.
