China is placing a strategic focus on AI in Education Reform as it moves to modernize its school system and strengthen its position as a global technology leader. In a new policy paper released on Wednesday, the government outlined plans to embed artificial intelligence into teaching practices, textbooks, and student curricula at every level — from primary schools to universities.

The Ministry of Education believes that AI in Education Reform will cultivate essential skills such as independent thinking, problem-solving, communication, and collaboration among both students and teachers, paving the way for a new generation of innovators.

“Artificial intelligence will cultivate the basic abilities of teachers and students and shape the core competitiveness of innovative talents,” the ministry said in its official statement.

Chinese policymakers see the integration of AI as a way to build more dynamic, challenging, and future-proof classrooms. The reform follows the rapid expansion of AI courses at Chinese universities, a trend fueled by domestic advancements in large-language models like DeepSeek, which attracted international attention earlier this year.

This initiative is part of China’s broader strategy to become a “strong-education nation” by 2035 — a vision that puts AI and digital tools at the center of learning, research, and economic growth.
