Meta is once again pushing the boundaries of artificial intelligence, this time by experimenting with AI-generated comments on Instagram. In a move that has already stirred mixed reactions, the company is testing a feature that suggests comment replies based on post content. While some users may find this tool convenient, critics argue that it could dilute the authenticity of interactions on the platform.
How Meta AI-Generated Comments Work
The new test feature was first spotted by Jonah Manzano, an X (formerly Twitter) user known for tracking emerging social media updates. According to a video shared by Manzano, some Instagram users now see a “Write with Meta AI” prompt when leaving a comment.

Users participating in the test will notice a pencil icon next to the text bar under a post. Tapping this icon activates Meta AI, which then analyzes the post’s content before generating three suggested comments.
For example, if someone shares a photo of themselves smiling and giving a thumbs-up in their living room, the AI might suggest the following comments:
- “Cute living room setup.”
- “Love the cozy atmosphere.”
- “Great photo shoot location.”
If none of the initial suggestions seem appealing, users can refresh the AI’s responses to generate new options.
Meta’s Expanding AI Integration
A Meta spokesperson confirmed the test in a statement to TechCrunch, saying:
“We regularly test more features for you to use Meta AI across our apps. Outside of DMs, you will find Meta AI in areas like comments, feed, groups, and search to make your experiences more fun and useful.”
Meta has not yet provided details on the availability of AI-generated comments for a wider audience. However, this isn’t the first time the company has experimented with AI-powered features. In 2023, Meta tested AI-generated comment summaries on Facebook, signaling a growing interest in automated interactions across its platforms.
A Push for AI or a Threat to Authenticity?
While Meta may see AI-generated comments on Instagram as an innovation designed to improve engagement, many users are skeptical about the need for AI-driven responses.
Some users argue that the beauty of Instagram lies in genuine and personal interactions, and AI-generated comments could make conversations feel artificial. The platform has already evolved from a simple photo-sharing app to one where engagement is often driven by trends, influencers, and algorithmic content—adding AI-powered comments could further shift the platform away from authentic user experiences.
For users who value organic engagement, the feature might be seen as unnecessary, or even intrusive. Many yearn for the days when Instagram was more about real moments rather than curated perfection and automated interactions.
Will Meta Roll Out AI Comments for Everyone?
As with any test feature, it remains unclear if or when Meta AI-generated comments will be launched globally. Meta has a history of experimenting with AI-driven tools, only to scrap them if they fail to gain traction.
For now, Instagram users will have to wait and see whether Meta AI becomes a permanent part of the comment section—or fades into the long list of abandoned social media experiments.
