The OpenAI Windsurf acquisition could soon reshape the AI coding landscape, as OpenAI is reportedly in advanced talks to acquire Windsurf — an AI-powered coding tool — in a deal valued at around $3 billion. If finalized, the acquisition would represent OpenAI’s largest purchase to date.

According to a Bloomberg report published Wednesday (April 16), Windsurf, which was formerly known as Exafunction, could help OpenAI strengthen its position in the fast-growing market for AI-enabled coding assistants — an area currently led by Microsoft’s GitHub Copilot, Anthropic’s Claude-powered coding tools, and Anysphere’s Cursor.

Sources familiar with the OpenAI Windsurf acquisition told Bloomberg the terms are still fluid, and negotiations could either progress or fall apart. Both companies declined to comment on the matter.

Windsurf, which raised funds last year at a valuation of $1.25 billion in a deal led by General Catalyst, had reportedly been seeking new funding at a $3 billion valuation before the OpenAI discussions surfaced.

If completed, the OpenAI Windsurf acquisition would underscore the company’s broader strategy to expand beyond generative text and into developer tools — especially as competition intensifies in both the enterprise and consumer AI markets.

Meanwhile, OpenAI is also rumored to be developing a new social media platform that leverages its generative AI technologies, as well as enhancing its developer offerings with the recent launch of GPT-4.1, which features improved multimodal capabilities across text, images, audio, and video.

The OpenAI Windsurf acquisition, if finalized, would likely strengthen OpenAI’s hand in the competitive AI coding space, positioning it as a more direct rival to established tools and platforms that are reshaping software development workflows.
