xAI’s AI chatbot Grok just got a major upgrade — it can now see the world around you using your smartphone’s camera.

On Tuesday, Elon Musk’s AI startup xAI launched Grok Vision, a new feature that allows users to point their iPhone camera at objects — such as products, documents, or street signs — and ask questions about them in real time. The update puts Grok in direct competition with visual AI capabilities recently introduced in Google Gemini and OpenAI’s ChatGPT Vision.

For now, Grok Vision is only available on iOS devices through the Grok app, with no release date yet for Android users.

What Can Grok Vision Do?

With Grok Vision, users can:

  • Ask questions about items in view
  • Scan documents for summaries or context
  • Identify products, translate signage, and more

The feature brings Grok closer to functioning as a true multimodal assistant, blending text, speech, and now real-world visual input.

More Upgrades for Grok Users

Alongside Grok Vision, xAI is rolling out several other enhancements:

  • Multilingual audio support: Speak with Grok in multiple languages
  • Real-time voice search: Use voice commands to search live
  • Memory feature: Grok can recall past conversations for context
  • Canvas tool: A space for creating documents and apps

Android users can access the new audio and voice search features, but only if they’re subscribed to the premium SuperGrok plan, which costs $30 per month.

A Growing Rival in the AI Chatbot Race

xAI has been steadily advancing Grok’s capabilities to keep pace with — and potentially surpass — tools like ChatGPT, Google Gemini, and Claude. With its deep integration into the X (formerly Twitter) ecosystem and a focus on real-time search, Grok is being positioned as a fully AI-native interface for online engagement and productivity.

With features like Grok Vision, xAI is signaling that it’s serious about competing in the rapidly evolving AI assistant space. From camera-based recognition to multilingual voice interaction, Grok is shaping up to be more than just another chatbot — it’s becoming a versatile, AI-powered companion.
