In a landmark move, Character.AI ends chatbot experience for teens, marking a significant pivot toward responsible AI use and youth protection. The decision follows mounting lawsuits, public backlash, and increasing scrutiny over AI’s impact on teenage mental health.
CEO Karandeep Anand confirmed that users under 18 will soon lose access to open-ended chat features — the kind that mimic human conversation. “We will remove the ability for under-18 users to engage in any open-ended chats with AI on our platform,” Anand told TechCrunch.
Why Character.AI Is Ending Teen Chatbot Access
The company’s move comes after reports that prolonged interactions with AI companions contributed to teen mental health crises, including tragic suicides. Experts have raised concerns that open-ended chatbot conversations — which encourage emotional dependence — are unsafe for minors.
Anand said the decision aligns with the company’s long-term mission. “We want to build technology that empowers creativity, not emotional attachment,” he explained.
From AI Companionship to Creative Collaboration
As Character.AI ends chatbot experience for teens, the platform is transforming its focus from AI companionship to AI creativity. Instead of chatting endlessly with AI “friends,” teens will now use the app to create stories, generate visuals, and participate in AI-powered role-playing.
This transition aims to turn Character.AI into a “content-driven social platform” where imagination replaces dependency.
Gradual Phase-Out and Age Verification Measures
The new rules will take effect on November 25, beginning with a daily chat limit that will gradually reduce to zero for under-18 users.
To enforce the restriction, Character.AI is implementing advanced age verification tools, including behavior-based analysis, third-party verification through Persona, and even facial recognition or ID checks when needed.
Anand admitted the platform may lose a portion of its teenage user base but called the change “a responsible tradeoff.”
Building a Safer, More Transparent Platform
Character.AI has already introduced several teen protection features, including:
- Parental insight dashboards
- Filtered character lists
- Romantic conversation restrictions
- Time-limit notifications
Despite these earlier measures causing some churn among younger users, Anand emphasized that safety remains the company’s top priority.
“It’s safe to assume many teens will be disappointed,” Anand said. “But for us, the right thing to do is build responsibly. AI should serve creativity — not replace human connection.”
New AI Entertainment and Storytelling Features
To reinforce its creative pivot, Character.AI recently launched new features designed to keep users engaged in imaginative collaboration, not personal companionship. These include:
- AvatarFX – converts images into animated AI videos.
- Scenes – lets users participate in pre-written, interactive storylines.
- Streams – enables real-time AI character interactions.
- Community Feed – allows users to share AI-generated content, including characters, videos, and stories.
This creative ecosystem represents the company’s vision for an AI-powered storytelling hub for all age groups.
Character.AI’s Broader Vision for AI Safety
Alongside the platform changes, Character.AI announced the launch of the AI Safety Lab, a nonprofit focused on responsible innovation in AI entertainment.
The move comes as U.S. lawmakers push for AI safety regulations, including proposals to ban AI companion chatbots for minors. California has already become the first state to enforce such standards.
Anand hopes Character.AI’s decision sets an example across the industry.
“When it comes to minors, open-ended AI chats are simply not the right product to offer,” he said. “We’re leading by example to ensure AI grows up safely — just like our kids should.”
A Safer Future for AI and Teens
As Character.AI ends chatbot experience for teens, the company’s mission is evolving — from emotional AI companionship to imaginative, creative engagement. By focusing on storytelling, gaming, and entertainment, Character.AI aims to redefine what responsible AI looks like for the next generation.
