In a significant move to expand its AI footprint in one of the world’s fastest-growing digital markets, Google partners with Reliance to offer millions of Jio users free access to Google’s AI Pro plan for 18 months. The collaboration, announced on Thursday, positions India as a key testing ground for large-scale AI adoption.
The partnership bundles Google’s AI Pro subscription with select Jio 5G plans at no additional cost — a clear signal that Google is betting big on India’s billion-plus internet users.
An AI Alliance to Outpace Rivals
The timing is strategic. Just three months ago, Perplexity teamed up with Bharti Airtel, Reliance’s main competitor, to offer free access to Perplexity Pro. Now, with Google partnering with Reliance, the AI race in India’s telecom sector is heating up.
The offer initially targets users aged 18 to 25, before rolling out nationwide. It includes access to Gemini 2.5 Pro via the Gemini app, extended limits for Nano Banana and Veo 3.1, expanded Notebook LM tools, and 2 TB of cloud storage across Google’s ecosystem — Photos, Gmail, Drive, and WhatsApp backups.
A $396 Value — at No Extra Cost
The 18-month bundle, valued at ₹35,100 ($396), gives Indian consumers unprecedented access to premium AI features. Google’s AI Pro plan typically costs ₹1,950 ($22) per month but will now be free for eligible Jio users.
“This partnership will explore bringing more delightful local experiences powered by AI to Jio users,” Reliance announced.
Google Partners with Reliance to Strengthen AI Infrastructure in India
Beyond the consumer offer, Google partners with Reliance to strengthen India’s AI infrastructure through Google Cloud. Reliance’s AI arm, Reliance Intelligence, will act as a strategic go-to-market partner, helping expand Gemini Enterprise and creating pre-built AI agents tailored for Indian businesses.
According to Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google and Alphabet, “Today’s announcement will put Google’s cutting-edge AI tools in the hands of consumers, businesses, and India’s vibrant developer community.”
Reliance’s AI Ambitions Deepen
At its 48th Annual General Meeting, Reliance revealed partnerships with Google and Meta to boost its AI capabilities through Reliance Intelligence, a new subsidiary focused on building India’s AI backbone. The companies committed to a joint ₹8.55 billion ($100 million) venture, with Reliance holding a 70% stake.
Mukesh Ambani emphasized, “Through our collaboration with strategic and long-term partners like Google, we aim to make India not just AI-enabled but AI-empowered.”
The Bigger Picture: India as the AI Testbed
India, now home to over a billion internet users, has become a crucial testing ground for global AI firms like Google, OpenAI, and Anthropic. These companies are eager to gather diverse data, refine models, and experiment with use cases that could later scale globally.
Earlier this year, Google also offered Indian students a one-year free AI Pro plan, while OpenAI recently launched its ChatGPT Go plan free for Indian users. Together, these moves signal a massive AI acceleration wave in India.
As Google partners with Reliance, it’s evident that both companies see India not just as a market — but as the next frontier for building and testing AI at scale.
