Figma has officially kicked off a major India expansion by opening its first local office in Bengaluru. The move marks a strategic step for the design and collaboration platform as it looks to go beyond design and attract India’s massive community of developers.

Founded in 2012 by Dylan Field and Evan Wallace, Figma transformed how designers work by introducing a browser-based design tool that made real-time collaboration possible. Now, the company wants to do the same for developers — and it believes India is the perfect place to make that happen.

Why Figma Is Betting Big on India

India has one of the world’s largest developer populations, with over 20 million coders contributing to platforms like GitHub. According to Abhishek Mathur, Figma’s VP of Engineering, the Figma India expansion is about “bridging design and development” while changing perceptions of Figma as purely a designer’s tool.

“India has such a large developer community that may not yet think of Figma as their tool,” Mathur said. “We want to show developers that Figma can help them move beyond writing code — it’s about collaboration, creativity, and product-building from start to finish.”

Until now, Figma had supported Indian users remotely through its Singapore office. But with India becoming its second-largest user base after the U.S., the company decided it was time to build a physical presence.

Bengaluru: The Centerpiece of Figma’s India Expansion

Figma’s new Bengaluru office will strengthen its sales, community engagement, and marketing operations in India. The company already serves customers across 85% of India’s states and counts major brands like CRED, Swiggy, Zomato, Myntra, Airtel, and Infosys among its clients.

Mathur revealed that India’s role in the Figma India expansion is not just commercial but also creative. “We’re getting valuable product feedback from India, especially around code-export features and AI integrations,” he noted.

Developers Drive the Next Phase of Figma’s Growth

Globally, about one-third of Figma’s users are developers — and that number is growing fast in India. Figma’s AI-powered tool Figma Make has seen especially strong adoption in the region, with Indian users generating over 800,000 prototypes so far.

The platform’s Dev Mode, launched in 2023, has also gained traction among developers who want to convert designs into clean, production-ready code quickly.

“The imagination-to-production spectrum is what makes India special,” Mathur explained. “Developers here are building fast, iterating faster, and challenging us to push our technology further.”

AI at the Heart of Figma’s Global Strategy

Part of the Figma India expansion includes deeper integration of AI tools designed to blur the line between design and development. Features like Figma Make now allow users to generate fully functional web apps from natural language prompts, turning Figma into a creative co-pilot rather than just a design workspace.

This positions Figma to compete not just with Adobe and Canva, but also with emerging AI coding tools such as Replit and Lovable.

A Global Vision Rooted in Local Talent

Figma’s India expansion is as much about community as it is about business. The “Friends of Figma” India group now has over 25,000 active members, making it one of the largest design and developer communities in the country.

Mathur emphasized that Figma aims to deepen its engagement with this audience through more events, hackathons, and partnerships. “We’re here to listen, collaborate, and co-create with India’s design and developer ecosystem,” he said.
