Defense tech company Anduril is betting that the future of hiring elite AI talent doesn’t lie in resumes or whiteboard interviews — but in autonomous drone racing.
Founded by Palmer Luckey, Anduril has unveiled the Anduril AI Grand Prix, a first-of-its-kind competition where software, not humans, flies the drones. The goal is simple but ambitious: build the best autonomous system and let it outfly the competition.
The prize? A share of a $500,000 cash pool, plus something far more valuable to many engineers — a potential job at Anduril and a chance to bypass the company’s traditional recruiting process.
What Makes the Anduril AI Grand Prix Different
Unlike traditional drone racing leagues, the Anduril AI Grand Prix bans manual piloting entirely. Human competitors never touch the controls. Instead, teams are judged on how well their AI software can make split-second decisions, navigate complex courses, and outperform rival autonomous systems.
“The whole point of Anduril is that autonomy has finally advanced to the point where you don’t need a human micromanaging every drone,” Luckey said. “So why would we sponsor a race that’s about humans flying drones?”
After realizing no such competition existed, Anduril decided to create one from scratch.
Not Even Anduril’s Own Drones Are Racing
In an interesting twist, teams won’t be flying Anduril-built drones. Instead, the competition will use drones from fellow defense tech startup Neros Technologies. According to Luckey, Anduril’s drones are simply too large and heavy for the high-speed, tightly controlled racecourse planned for the finals in Ohio.
The event is being organized in partnership with the Drone Champions League and JobsOhio, with the final race scheduled near Anduril’s major manufacturing hub.
A Global Competition — With Clear Lines
The Anduril AI Grand Prix is open to international teams, with one major exception: Russia. Luckey said the exclusion mirrors policies seen in global sporting events and reflects the current geopolitical reality.
Teams from China, however, are allowed to compete — though winning doesn’t guarantee employment. Any job offers would still be subject to U.S. laws, security checks, and interviews.
“If you work for the Chinese military, you’re not going to get a job at Anduril,” Luckey said plainly.
From Drones to a New Era of AI Racing
The competition will run through three qualifying rounds starting in April, with the final Grand Prix race taking place in November. Luckey hopes to attract at least 50 teams, with early interest already coming from universities and research groups.
And this may only be the beginning. If successful, the Anduril AI Grand Prix could expand beyond quadcopter drones to include:
- Autonomous ground vehicles
- Underwater AI systems
- Even spacecraft racing scenarios
For Anduril, the event is about more than spectacle. It’s a live-fire test of autonomy — and a bold new way to identify engineers who can build AI systems that work in the real world, under pressure.
