A former Google software engineer has been convicted in one of the most closely watched technology espionage cases in recent years, underscoring rising global tensions around artificial intelligence and national security.
A federal jury in San Francisco on Thursday found Linwei Ding, a former Google engineer, guilty of stealing Google AI trade secrets to benefit two Chinese companies he was secretly working with, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.
Linwei Ding, a 38-year-old Chinese national also known as Leon Ding, was convicted after an 11-day trial on seven counts of economic espionage and seven counts of theft of trade secrets. Prosecutors said he stole thousands of pages of highly sensitive internal documents related to Google’s AI infrastructure.
Severe Penalties Ahead
The potential penalties are substantial. Each economic espionage count carries a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison and a $5 million fine, while each trade secrets charge carries up to 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
Linwei Ding is scheduled to appear at a status conference on February 3, where the court will outline next steps ahead of sentencing. His legal team did not immediately respond to requests for comment following the verdict.
What Was Stolen
According to prosecutors, Ding stole confidential information detailing the hardware infrastructure and software platforms that power Google’s supercomputing data centers—systems critical to training large-scale AI models.
Some of the stolen materials reportedly included chip design blueprints intended to give Google a competitive edge over cloud rivals like Amazon and Microsoft. The technology was also designed to reduce Google’s dependence on third-party chipmakers such as Nvidia.
Authorities argued that these Google AI trade secrets were among the company’s most closely guarded assets, forming the backbone of its AI and cloud computing strategy.
Timeline of Espionage
Ding joined Google in May 2019, prosecutors said. The alleged thefts began roughly three years later, around the time he was being recruited by an early-stage Chinese technology company.
What made the case particularly serious, according to the DOJ, was that Ding allegedly maintained his role at Google while simultaneously working to support competing foreign firms—without disclosure.
Originally indicted in March 2024 on four counts of theft of trade secrets, Ding’s case escalated significantly. A superseding indictment in February expanded the charges, adding economic espionage counts tied directly to foreign entities.

The case was coordinated through the Disruptive Technology Strike Force, an interagency initiative launched in 2023 by the Biden administration. The task force focuses on preventing sensitive U.S. technologies—including AI, semiconductors, and advanced computing—from falling into the hands of foreign adversaries.
U.S. officials have increasingly warned that AI represents not just an economic advantage, but a strategic one, with implications for defense, cybersecurity, and geopolitical power.
Google’s Role and Response
Google itself was not charged in the case. The company has said it cooperated fully with law enforcement throughout the investigation. Google declined to comment further following the jury’s verdict.
Still, the conviction highlights the challenges faced by major tech companies operating at the cutting edge of AI, where insider threats can be just as dangerous as external cyberattacks.
