Google Uses AI Genome Sequencing to Preserve Genetic Data of Endangered Species

Scientists estimate that nearly one million species could face extinction in the coming decades. When a species disappears, its genetic blueprint vanishes with it—often taking irreplaceable biological knowledge along the way. That’s where AI genome sequencing is starting to play a pivotal role.

To address this challenge, Google is working with global research initiatives to preserve the genetic data of endangered animals before it’s too late. Through a combination of funding, advanced AI tools, and scientific partnerships, Google is helping sequence and openly release genomes from some of the planet’s most threatened species.

Inside Google’s Genome Sequencing Initiative

The effort supports the Vertebrate Genomes Project, led by Erich Jarvis at The Rockefeller University, as well as the broader Earth BioGenome Project. Together, these groups aim to sequence the genomes of all known species on Earth—a task once considered nearly impossible.

Using AI genome sequencing, Google has already helped preserve the genetic code of 13 endangered species across mammals, birds, amphibians, and reptiles. Nine of those genomes have now been made freely available to conservation researchers worldwide.

How Genomes Can Save Species

A genome is a species’ complete set of DNA instructions. By decoding it, scientists gain insight into how an animal has adapted to its environment, how genetically diverse its population is, and how best to protect it from extinction.

One powerful example comes from researchers at the University of Otago, who sequenced every living kākāpō, the world’s only nocturnal and flightless parrot. By analyzing its genome, conservationists developed a targeted breeding program that has helped pull the species back from the brink.

This is the promise of AI genome sequencing: turning raw DNA data into actionable conservation strategies.

From a Moonshot to a Practical Tool

Sequencing the first human genome took 13 years and nearly $3 billion. Today, thanks to AI, similar work can be done in days for a fraction of the cost.

Google researchers have spent more than a decade developing AI systems that accelerate and refine this process. Tools like DeepVariant, DeepConsensus, and DeepPolisher dramatically improve accuracy while reducing time and expense. What once felt like a scientific moonshot is now becoming scalable reality.

With AI genome sequencing, scientists can not only preserve individual species but also compare genomes across the tree of life—revealing how evolution unfolded and how ecosystems are interconnected.

Why This Matters Beyond Wildlife

The benefits of preserving genetic data extend far beyond conservation. Genomic insights help researchers:

  • Understand disease resistance and global health risks
  • Study how species adapt to climate change

By building a comprehensive genetic catalogue of life, AI genome sequencing lays the foundation for breakthroughs in medicine, agriculture, and environmental science.

Expanding the Mission With Open Science

To scale the effort, Google.org has awarded funding through its AI for Science program, naming The Rockefeller University as a recipient. The goal: expand genome sequencing to 150 additional species, with all data released openly to the scientific community and the public.

Google says this open-access approach is essential. The real impact of AI, the company argues, comes when researchers worldwide can use these tools to solve urgent, real-world problems.

A Race Against Time

Sequencing the genomes of millions of species is still an enormous challenge—but AI genome sequencing is making the task faster, cheaper, and more precise than ever before. As extinction risks accelerate, efforts like this may determine how much of Earth’s biological heritage can be preserved for future generations.
