The idea of an xAI lunar manufacturing facility is now at the center of Elon Musk’s latest vision for artificial intelligence and space infrastructure.
During a Tuesday night all-hands meeting, Musk gathered employees of xAI to discuss the company’s future. According to The New York Times, Musk told staff that xAI would need a factory on the moon capable of building AI satellites and launching them into orbit using a giant catapult.
“You have to go to the moon,” Musk reportedly said, describing how an xAI lunar manufacturing facility could enable the company to harness more computing power than any rival. He added that intelligence at that scale would be difficult to imagine but “incredibly exciting” to witness.
Leadership Changes and IPO Timing
The announcement of an xAI lunar manufacturing facility comes at a moment of internal transition.
On Monday night, xAI co-founder Tony Wu announced his departure. Less than a day later, co-founder Jimmy Ba, who reported directly to Musk, also said he was leaving. That brings the total to six of xAI’s twelve founding members who have exited the company.
The departures coincide with broader changes surrounding the newly merged xAI-SpaceX structure, which is reportedly moving toward a potential IPO. A public offering tied to SpaceX could target a valuation of $1.5 trillion as soon as this summer.
Musk acknowledged that rapid growth can create internal shifts, telling employees that companies moving faster than competitors often see leadership changes between early and later stages.
From Mars to the Moon
For years, Mars was the central ambition of SpaceX. However, Musk recently indicated a pivot toward lunar development. Just before the Super Bowl, he posted that SpaceX had shifted focus to building a self-growing city on the Moon, arguing that a Mars colony could take more than 20 years, while a lunar effort could reach viability in half the time.
The concept of an xAI lunar manufacturing facility aligns with that broader lunar focus. Although SpaceX has not yet completed a moon mission, the proposal positions the Moon as a strategic hub for AI infrastructure rather than just exploration.
The Vision Behind the Strategy
One venture investor familiar with xAI’s long-term ambitions previously described Musk’s overarching goal as building the world’s most powerful world model—an AI trained on proprietary, real-world data sources competitors cannot replicate.
Under that theory, Tesla contributes energy and road data, Neuralink provides brain-interface insights, and The Boring Company adds subsurface data. An xAI lunar manufacturing facility would extend that data ecosystem into orbital mechanics and space-based compute.
Legal and Geopolitical Questions
The legal foundation for lunar expansion rests partly on the 1967 Outer Space Treaty, which prohibits national claims of sovereignty over the Moon. However, a 2015 U.S. law permits ownership of extracted lunar resources.
Mary-Jane Rubenstein, a professor at Wesleyan University, previously noted that this distinction may be more symbolic than practical, describing it as akin to claiming materials from a house without owning the house itself.
Not all global powers agree with this interpretation, adding geopolitical uncertainty to the feasibility of an xAI lunar manufacturing facility.
As Musk outlines lunar ambitions and xAI navigates leadership departures, the proposal raises as many operational and legal questions as it answers.
