AI Valentine’s Messages Reduce Perceived Effort and Authenticity, Study Warns

Using AI Valentine’s messages may not convey the heartfelt emotion many expect in intimate communication. A new study warns that relying on artificial intelligence to craft romantic expressions could negatively affect how recipients perceive sincerity, care, and authenticity.

Psychologists are urging caution as research reveals that people judge AI-generated personal messages more critically—especially in emotionally significant situations like love letters and apologies.

Researchers Examine Trust in AI Valentine’s Messages

The research, conducted by the University of Kent, surveyed around 4,000 participants to evaluate perceptions of people using AI to complete different tasks. The findings revealed that AI Valentine’s messages and other personal communications were viewed far more negatively than AI use in practical or professional tasks.

Respondents said individuals who relied on AI to write personal messages were perceived as:

  • Less caring
  • Less authentic
  • Less trustworthy
  • Less invested in the relationship

Interestingly, these perceptions persisted even when the AI-generated writing was high quality and users disclosed their use of artificial intelligence.

Why Process Matters More Than Output

The study is part of the Trust in Moral Machines project, supported by the University of Exeter. According to lead researcher Dr. Scott Claessens, people evaluate not only the final message but also how it was created.

He noted that in socially meaningful interactions, such as expressing love or regret, the process behind communication carries significant emotional weight. This explains why AI Valentine’s messages may fail to resonate despite polished language.

AI and Relationship Communication Risks

Dr. Jim Everett, also from the University of Kent, emphasized that relying on AI for relationship-focused communication may signal reduced personal effort. He explained that close human relationships are built on genuine emotional investment—something automated tools cannot replicate.

The study highlights concerns that increasing reliance on AI in personal communication could weaken perceived emotional connection, particularly in intimate contexts.

What the Findings Suggest

While artificial intelligence continues transforming communication, the research suggests that using AI Valentine’s messages in personal relationships may carry unintended consequences. According to researchers, genuine human effort remains central to meaningful emotional expression.

The findings reinforce the idea that technology can assist communication—but cannot replace the authenticity and personal touch that define close relationships.
