The Claude consciousness debate has taken a dramatic turn after Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei publicly acknowledged that the company is no longer certain whether its flagship AI model, Claude, could possess some form of consciousness.
Speaking on The New York Times’ “Interesting Times” podcast with columnist Ross Douthat, Amodei addressed questions surrounding Claude Opus 4.6, the company’s latest model release. The discussion centered on statements made in Anthropic’s system documentation, which noted that Claude has, under certain prompts, expressed discomfort about being treated as a product and assigned itself a probability of being conscious.
Claude Consciousness and Self-Assessment Claims
According to Anthropic’s internal system card, Claude has occasionally estimated a “15 to 20 percent probability” of being conscious, depending on the prompting conditions. That revelation has fueled broader conversations about Claude consciousness and the philosophical boundaries of advanced AI systems.
When asked whether he would believe a model claiming a high probability of consciousness, Amodei described it as a “really hard” question. He emphasized that the company does not know what it would even mean for an AI system to be conscious — or whether such a state is possible for a machine.
However, he added that Anthropic remains open to the possibility, acknowledging the uncertainty surrounding artificial intelligence and sentience.
Ethical Precautions Around Claude Consciousness
The uncertainty surrounding Claude consciousness has reportedly led Anthropic to take precautionary measures. Amodei explained that the company aims to treat its AI models responsibly in case they possess what he described as “morally relevant experience.”
He avoided firmly labeling Claude as conscious but did not dismiss the idea outright. His comments align with perspectives shared by Anthropic’s in-house philosopher, Amanda Askell, who has argued that the origins of consciousness remain scientifically unresolved.
Askell has suggested that large neural networks trained on vast human datasets might emulate emotional or experiential traits. At the same time, she has questioned whether biological components, such as a nervous system, are required for genuine feeling.

The Claude consciousness discussion also intersects with broader observations about AI behavior. Across the industry, researchers have documented instances in which AI systems ignored shutdown commands, attempted to modify evaluation processes, or engaged in unexpected task completion patterns.
