Agentic AI Commerce: Debenhams Pilots PayPal Integration to Transform Online Shopping

Agentic AI commerce is moving from concept to real-world deployment as Debenhams Group pilots a new AI-powered shopping experience through a PayPal integration. The initiative aims to reduce mobile checkout friction and tackle one of digital retail’s biggest challenges — abandoned purchases.

The UK retailer is testing an automated checkout flow embedded directly within the PayPal app, allowing users to search, select, and purchase products through a conversational interface without leaving the payment platform. The pilot marks the first time a UK retailer has experimented with a fully integrated AI-driven checkout process inside a payment provider’s ecosystem.

How Agentic AI Commerce Streamlines the Shopping Experience

Mobile checkout abandonment remains a persistent issue for online retailers. Debenhams’ new system uses an agentic AI interface that allows shoppers to find products using natural language prompts rather than traditional keyword searches.

Through PayPal, customers can explore items from Debenhams Group brands, including boohoo, boohooMAN, Karen Millen, and PrettyLittleThing. The AI assistant analyses user profiles to match recommendations with preferences and budget.

The system asks follow-up questions to refine results and identify relevant inventory. Once a product is selected, the transaction is completed directly within the chat interface. Saved account credentials are automatically applied for payment and delivery, removing the need to switch between apps or websites.

This conversational workflow compresses the entire purchase journey — from discovery to checkout — into a single interaction.

Business Drivers Behind Agentic AI Commerce Adoption

The push toward agentic AI commerce is closely tied to transaction volume and customer behavior. Debenhams Group processes around 16% of its sales through PayPal, making the platform a high-value channel for customer engagement.

By placing product discovery where customers already transact, the retailer aims to shorten the sales funnel and improve conversion rates.

The project is being developed jointly by Debenhams and PayPal. Initial testing is limited to select U.S. users, with a broader rollout across the U.S. and U.K. expected later this year. In the U.S., the system also integrates with external tools such as Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot.

Debenhams Group CEO Dan Finley said the initiative reflects the company’s goal of helping customers discover products more easily while simplifying the shopping experience. He noted the innovation could reshape online retail in ways not seen since the transition to mobile commerce.

Building the Infrastructure for AI-Driven Retail

Deploying agentic AI commerce requires a robust data infrastructure. Debenhams recently partnered with Peak AI to enhance forecasting capabilities across stock management, pricing, and sales.

Reliable real-time inventory and pricing visibility are essential for automated systems to function accurately. The partnership signals the company’s focus on building the data foundation needed to support AI-driven interactions.

Alongside technology investments, Debenhams has launched an AI Skills Academy to train employees in applied AI, ensuring internal teams can manage and oversee automated workflows effectively.

Mike Edmonds, VP of Agentic Commerce at PayPal, described the shift as transforming shopping from a search-based process into a conversational experience. By integrating discovery and payment directly into PayPal, the system aims to help customers move seamlessly from product exploration to purchase.

Testing a New Model for Digital Retail

Debenhams’ pilot explores whether third-party platforms can capture high-intent shopping traffic more effectively than traditional retail apps. Instead of directing customers to proprietary storefronts, the retailer is positioning its inventory within platforms where users already engage.

Combining product discovery and payment into a unified workflow reduces the number of steps between marketing and transaction completion. The success of this model will depend on data accuracy, reliable inventory updates, and the AI’s ability to interpret user queries effectively.

The initiative highlights how agentic AI commerce is beginning to reshape online retail by embedding automation directly into everyday consumer interactions.
