The term traces back to late-2000s Peak Oil forums, where users warned that industrial civilization would inevitably fall due to dwindling natural resources. Doomerism entered mainstream internet culture around 2018 through the “Doomer Wojak” meme popularized on 4chan. The character typically depicts a young, disillusioned man—often smoking, wearing a beanie, and isolated—symbolizing resignation and despair.
Core Beliefs
Doomers view problems such as overpopulation, environmental pollution, political corruption, economic inequality, and unchecked AI development as fundamentally unsolvable. This outlook often results in nihilism, emotional detachment, or apathy toward long-term planning and collective action.
Unlike abstract philosophical nihilism, however, doomerism is rooted in tangible, real-world anxieties.
