India’s artificial intelligence ambitions are accelerating after Adani Group pledged a massive $100 billion investment to build AI data centers across the country. The move highlights India’s growing push to secure a larger role in the global AI race while expanding domestic computing infrastructure.
The long-term initiative, known as the Adani $100B AI investment plan, will run through 2035 and focus on renewable-energy-powered facilities designed specifically to handle intensive AI workloads. The company expects the project to trigger an additional $150 billion in related investments, potentially creating a $250 billion AI infrastructure ecosystem in India over the next decade.
AI Data Centers to Strengthen India’s Global AI Position
The expansion of AI data centers reflects rising global demand for computing power as companies look beyond the United States for reliable infrastructure, energy capacity, and supportive regulatory environments. India’s rapidly growing digital economy and renewable energy capabilities have made it an attractive destination for AI-related investments.
The announcement comes during the ongoing India AI Impact Summit in New Delhi, where leaders from major technology companies including OpenAI, Nvidia, Anthropic, Microsoft, and Google are engaging with policymakers and industry stakeholders.
Adani Group Chairman Gautam Adani described the initiative as a strategic bet on the convergence of energy and computing, emphasizing that India aims to build its own AI infrastructure rather than depend on external technology ecosystems.
5 Gigawatts Capacity Under Adani $100B AI Plan
Under the Adani $100B AI strategy, the company plans to deploy up to 5 gigawatts of data center capacity nationwide. Major AI data center campuses are being developed in Visakhapatnam and Noida, with additional facilities planned in Hyderabad and Pune. The group is also expanding its collaboration with Walmart-owned Flipkart to develop another AI-focused facility.
The initiative builds on AdaniConneX, a joint venture between Adani Enterprises and U.S.-based EdgeConneX, which has already delivered about 2 gigawatts of data center capacity across India. The new investment will significantly expand this infrastructure.
The company plans to operate these facilities as an integrated system, scaling both energy generation and processing capacity simultaneously to support growing AI demand.
Renewable Energy Powers Future AI Data Centers
A core element of the AI data centers strategy is the use of carbon-neutral energy sources. Adani intends to power the infrastructure using its renewable energy portfolio, including the 30-gigawatt Khavda renewable project in western India, where more than 10 gigawatts are already operational.
The group also plans to invest an additional $55 billion in renewable energy generation and battery storage systems. This approach aims to ensure sustainable operations while supporting large-scale AI computing needs.
To reduce reliance on global supply chains, the company plans to co-invest in domestic manufacturing of essential components such as transformers, power electronics, and thermal management systems.
Expanding India’s AI Infrastructure Ecosystem
The broader vision behind the Adani $100B AI initiative is to establish a unified AI infrastructure network capable of supporting enterprise, research, and large-scale industrial applications. The company expects its investment to help build a stronger domestic technology base and accelerate AI adoption across industries.
While the commitment represents one of the largest infrastructure investments in India’s technology sector, the company has not disclosed how much capital is already committed or when the first large-scale AI workloads will become operational.
The investment underscores the growing importance of AI data centers as foundational infrastructure for the next phase of global technological competition.
