The Reliance AI investment plan focuses on building gigawatt-scale data centers, a nationwide edge computing network, and new AI-driven services integrated into the company’s Jio telecom platform.
Speaking at the India AI Impact Summit in New Delhi on Thursday, Mukesh Ambani revealed that Reliance has already started constructing multi-gigawatt data centers in Jamnagar, Gujarat. More than 120 megawatts of computing capacity is expected to become operational in the second half of 2026.
According to Ambani, the expansion aims to address one of the biggest barriers in artificial intelligence development — access to affordable computing power.
“The biggest constraint in AI today is not talent or imagination,” Ambani said. “It is the scarcity and high cost of computing.”
India’s Growing AI Investment Wave
The Reliance AI investment plan comes amid a broader surge in artificial intelligence spending across India. The Adani Group recently outlined a separate $100 billion plan to develop AI data centers, while the Indian government expects over $200 billion in AI infrastructure investment within the next two years.
Global technology companies are also strengthening their presence in the country. OpenAI has partnered with the Tata Group to build about 100 megawatts of AI capacity in India, with plans to scale operations to one gigawatt.
The growing competition highlights India’s emergence as a key global hub for AI innovation and digital infrastructure.
Focus on Technological Self-Reliance and Cost Reduction
A central goal of the Reliance AI investment plan is to boost India’s technological independence. Ambani emphasized that India cannot rely on external intelligence infrastructure and must develop its own capabilities.
Reliance aims to reduce the cost of AI services significantly, replicating the strategy it used to lower mobile data prices through its Jio telecom network.
The initiative will also be supported by Reliance’s green energy capacity, including 10 gigawatts of surplus power generated from solar projects in Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh.
Industry Partnerships and AI Integration
The Reliance AI investment plan includes collaborations with Indian enterprises, startups, and academic institutions to integrate AI across key industries such as manufacturing, logistics, agriculture, healthcare, and financial services.
Reliance’s telecom arm Jio has already formed strategic partnerships in the AI space. Last year, it partnered with Google to offer free Gemini AI Pro access to millions of users in India.
Ambani also highlighted plans to develop AI tools in multiple Indian languages to accelerate adoption and make artificial intelligence more accessible nationwide.
India’s AI Ambitions Accelerate
The Reliance AI investment plan underscores how India’s largest conglomerates are racing to secure a leading position in one of the country’s most promising technology sectors.
With large-scale infrastructure development, industry collaborations, and localized AI capabilities, the initiative signals a significant step toward strengthening India’s role in the global artificial intelligence ecosystem.
