Claude Code Voice Mode is officially rolling out, marking a major step toward more conversational, hands-free workflows for developers using Anthropic’s AI coding assistant.

Anthropic engineer Thariq Shihipar announced on X that the new feature is currently available to about 5% of users, with a broader rollout planned in the coming weeks.

The addition signals Anthropic’s push to make coding interactions more natural and fluid, reducing reliance on keyboard-heavy inputs.

Claude Code Voice Mode Brings Hands-Free Developer Tools

With Claude Code Voice Mode enabled, users can type /voice to toggle the feature on and then issue spoken commands. The system will interpret the instruction and execute the request directly in the coding environment.

For example, a developer might say, “refactor the authentication middleware,” and Claude Code will carry out the task.

This move positions Claude more firmly in the AI coding assistant voice hands-free developer tools category, where conversational interfaces aim to streamline productivity. By reducing friction between thought and execution, voice interaction could help developers move faster through repetitive or structural tasks.

However, several details remain unclear. Anthropic has not specified whether there are limits on voice usage, such as interaction caps or performance constraints. It is also unknown whether the feature was built in partnership with a third-party voice AI provider like ElevenLabs, which Anthropic was reportedly in talks with.

The company has not responded to requests for comment from TechCrunch regarding these questions.

Anthropic previously launched Voice Mode for its general-purpose Claude chatbot last May, allowing users to complete a range of everyday tasks through spoken interaction. The extension into Claude Code reflects a broader shift toward conversational computing across different product lines.

Claude Code Revenue $2.5 Billion Run Rate Signals Momentum

The timing of the Claude Code Voice Mode rollout comes amid strong growth for the product.

In February, Anthropic reported that Claude Code revenue $2.5 billion run rate had been achieved, more than doubling since the beginning of 2026. The company also said weekly active users have doubled since January.

Competition in AI coding assistants remains intense. Microsoft’s GitHub Copilot, Cursor, Google and OpenAI are all competing for developer adoption. Despite that crowded field, Claude Code has emerged as one of the most widely adopted tools in the market.

Meanwhile, Anthropic’s broader ecosystem has also seen growth. After the company declined to allow the Department of Defense to use its AI for domestic surveillance or autonomous weapons, its mobile app experienced a surge in downloads. The app rose to the top of the U.S. App Store charts, overtaking ChatGPT.

With Claude Code Voice Mode, Anthropic is deepening its commitment to conversational development workflows while building on strong revenue and user growth momentum.
