Snapdragon Wear Elite Chip Targets Next Wave of AI Wearables

Snapdragon Wear Elite chip is Qualcomm’s latest bet that AI-powered wearables are far from finished. Announced at a press briefing, the new processor is designed to power a broader category of “wrist plus” devices, including emerging AI-first gadgets.

Qualcomm made it clear that the Snapdragon Wear Elite chip will not replace the existing W5 Plus platform. Instead, it will sit alongside it, targeting manufacturers interested in building AI-centric wearables such as pendants, pins and potentially display-free smart glasses.

Snapdragon Wear Elite Chip Brings Stronger On-Device AI

Built on a 3nm process, the Snapdragon Wear Elite chip introduces both an eNPU and a Hexagon NPU to handle AI tasks. The eNPU focuses on low-power functions like keyword recognition and activity detection, while the Hexagon NPU is designed for heavier computational workloads.

According to Qualcomm, the Hexagon NPU can manage up to two billion parameters on-device and process as many as 10 tokens per second. That emphasis on AI wearables on-device AI NPU smartwatch performance suggests Qualcomm is prioritizing local processing over cloud reliance.

While the Elite shares a similar co-processor architecture with the W5 Plus, Qualcomm says power efficiency has improved significantly. GPS tracking, for instance, uses 40% less power. The chip also supports 9V quick charging, enabling an estimated 50% battery charge in about 10 minutes. Qualcomm claims users could see roughly 30% more “days of use,” which translates to longer intervals between charges.

Connectivity upgrades are also notable. The Snapdragon Wear Elite chip supports satellite connectivity, 5G, ultra-wideband and Bluetooth 6.0. CPU performance has reportedly increased fivefold, and the GPU now supports 1080p resolution at 60 frames per second for animations.

Beyond Android and Wear OS, the chip adds Linux support. This move could appeal to startups building proprietary AI pins or pendants that don’t rely solely on mainstream smartwatch ecosystems.

A major silicon provider tailoring a processor specifically for AI-centric devices suggests there is sustained demand behind the scenes. Google has publicly discussed building an ecosystem of AI-powered hardware, including wearables. Meanwhile, Apple has been rumored to be exploring an AI wearable, and Jony Ive and Sam Altman have hinted at similar ambitions tied to OpenAI.

As attention builds toward future smartwatch announcements — including ongoing speculation around Samsung Galaxy Watch Wear OS MWC 2026 developments — Qualcomm’s new chip positions itself as a foundational component for the next generation of intelligent wrist devices.

Whether it ultimately powers a flagship smartwatch or a new category of AI companion gadget, the Snapdragon Wear Elite chip signals that on-device AI in wearables is moving from experiment to infrastructure.
