Boehringer Ingelheim AI centre London Launches to Expand Drug Research

Boehringer Ingelheim said on Monday it is launching the Boehringer Ingelheim AI centre London to strengthen its artificial intelligence and machine learning capabilities in pharmaceutical research and development.

The new London site marks the company’s fourth specialist location after operations in Austria, Germany, and the United States. According to the company, these hubs focus on advanced computing methods such as algorithms, data analysis, and AI to improve processes and speed up discovery.

Why pharma companies are investing in AI

Drugmakers are increasingly adopting AI to handle some of the most time-consuming parts of development. That includes trial recruitment, site selection, and regulatory paperwork.

At the same time, industry leaders have acknowledged that AI has not yet delivered major breakthroughs in discovering new molecules.

£150 million investment over 10 years

Boehringer Ingelheim said it plans to invest 150 million pounds, or about $200 million, over the next 10 years in the London centre.

The company said the new facility will focus on developing targeted medicines for patients with unmet medical needs.

Why London was chosen

Paola Casarosa, Global Head of the Innovation Unit at Boehringer Ingelheim, said the UK was selected because of its strong legacy in AI and government support for data-driven innovation in life sciences and healthcare.

The centre will be located near King’s Cross station in the Knowledge Quarter area of London, home to many AI companies including OpenAI, Google, and Meta.

UK pushes for AI leadership

Britain has recently positioned itself as an AI superpower and a base for advanced research.

In a separate industry move, Roche said it has expanded its AI computing capacity with more than 2,100 Nvidia chips.
