Anthropic Amazon $5B Investment Deal Expands With $100B AWS Commitment Over 10 Years

Anthropic’s latest announcement puts the Anthropic Amazon $5B investment deal in the spotlight, as Amazon agreed to invest another $5 billion in the AI company. That takes Amazon’s total investment in Anthropic to $13 billion.

In return, Anthropic has agreed to spend more than $100 billion on Amazon Web Services over the next decade. The agreement also gives Anthropic access to as much as 5 GW of new computing capacity to train and run Claude.

Anthropic Amazon $5B Investment Deal Mirrors Recent AI Partnerships

The structure of the agreement reflects how major AI partnerships are increasingly combining investment with infrastructure access.

Amazon struck a similar arrangement with OpenAI two months earlier when it joined a $110 billion funding round. Amazon contributed $50 billion in that deal, which valued the ChatGPT maker at a $730 billion pre-money valuation.

Like the Anthropic agreement, that transaction was also structured partly around cloud infrastructure services instead of pure cash investment.

Amazon Chips Play a Central Role

A key part of the new deal centers on Amazon’s in-house chips.

These include:

  • Graviton
  • Trainium

According to the announcement, the Anthropic agreement specifically covers Trainium2 through Trainium4 chips. That includes Trainium4, even though it is not yet available.

Amazon’s latest chip generation, Trainium3, launched in December.

Future Capacity Also Included

Beyond currently announced hardware, Anthropic has also secured the option to buy capacity on future Amazon chips as they are released.

That could give the company additional flexibility as demand for AI training and inference infrastructure continues to grow.

What Could Come Next for Anthropic

The announcement may also raise questions about future fundraising plans.

Reports have suggested venture capital firms have been offering Anthropic new capital in a deal that could value the company at $800 billion or more. No new funding round was announced alongside Monday’s update, but the market will likely be watching closely.
