ITA Airways AI Fuel Saving Tool is set to help the Italian carrier reduce fuel consumption and lower emissions as airlines worldwide deal with surging jet fuel prices and mounting cost pressure.
The airline, now part of the Lufthansa group, said on Thursday that the new system will improve aircraft flight performance using artificial intelligence. The move comes at a time when carriers have been heavily affected by the U.S.-Israeli war with Iran, which has pushed jet fuel prices sharply higher and forced many airlines to reconsider fares, fuel surcharges, grounded aircraft, and financial forecasts.
ITA Airways AI Fuel Saving Tool to Cut Fuel Use and CO2
According to the airline, the ITA Airways AI Fuel Saving Tool is on track to deliver more than 7,100 tons of fuel savings and over 22,100 tons of CO2 reductions across 2025 and 2026.
The technology being deployed is SITA’s OptiFlight, now rolled out across the airline’s fleet. The system calculates the most efficient climb profile for each flight. That includes the ideal mix of airspeed, acceleration, engine power, and altitude gain from takeoff to cruising level.
To do this, the platform uses predictive analytics, machine learning, and 4D weather data.
How the AI System Improves Flight Performance
Instead of relying only on standard climb procedures, the tool adjusts recommendations for each specific flight. That can help aircraft burn less fuel during one of the most energy-intensive phases of travel.
ITA Chief Innovation Officer Francesco Presicce said the initiative enables meaningful fuel and emissions reductions without affecting efficiency or safety. He added that the program is part of the airline’s broader commitment to more sustainable and responsible aviation.
Airlines Face Pressure From Higher Fuel Costs
The launch arrives during a difficult period for the aviation sector. Fuel remains one of the biggest day-to-day expenses for airlines, accounting for as much as a quarter of operating costs.
Recent price increases have intensified that challenge. Jet fuel prices have climbed from around $85 to $90 per barrel to between $150 and $200 per barrel in recent weeks, creating a major financial burden for carriers.
Yann Cabaret, CEO of SITA for Aircraft, said the aviation industry must reduce emissions while maintaining operational efficiency. He noted that fuel consumption remains one of the biggest hurdles for airlines facing stricter regulatory and environmental demands.
