Era Computer Raises $11M as the startup looks to build a software platform designed for the next generation of AI gadgets. Instead of making hardware itself, the company wants to provide the intelligence layer that helps device makers launch smarter, more personalized products.
The company said it has secured $11 million in total funding to date, including a $9 million seed round led by Abstract Ventures and BoxGroup. Collaborative Fund and Mozilla Ventures also participated. Earlier, Era raised $2 million in pre-seed funding from Topology Ventures and Betaworks.
Era Computer Raises $11M to Build AI Gadget Infrastructure
Era’s platform is focused on enabling hardware creators to build AI-powered products such as glasses, jewelry, headphones, home speakers, and other emerging device formats.
The software layer is built to support AI agents, orchestration systems, customized voice creation, and intelligent features for connected products. Rather than competing with device brands, Era wants to be the backbone that powers them.
At a recent gathering in New York, artists using the company’s developer kit demonstrated experimental devices. These included a souvenir that shared facts and jokes about France, a stock-focused phone-like gadget, and a device that reported air quality updates.
Founders Bring Experience From Humane, HP, and Venture Firms
Era was founded last year by CEO Liz Dorman, CTO Alex Ollman, and CPO Megan Bole.
According to the report, Dorman previously worked at Humane on AI orchestration before moving to HP after its acquisition. Ollman worked at HP on enterprise agentic frameworks, while Bole had worked at Sutter Hill Ventures on the Jony Ive and Sam Altman io project before joining Era.
The startup has also attracted notable angel investors, including Flickr co-founder Caterina Fake, iPhone keyboard creator Ken Kocienda, and several founders from emerging tech companies.
Platform Supports 130+ Models Across Multiple Providers
Era said its system currently offers access to more than 130 large language models from over 14 providers.
That wide model support is intended to help hardware makers choose the right AI tools for different form factors and use cases. The company believes future gadgets will need software that can handle multimodal inputs, inference, and real-world constraints such as connectivity.
Investor Casey Caruso of Topology Ventures said the orchestration platform stands out because of its dynamic routing across models and its ability to manage practical device limitations.
Era Sees a Future Beyond Traditional Apps
CEO Liz Dorman said modern AI models create an opportunity to replace the traditional app layer with a more intelligent device experience.
She added that the future of technology should give people more choice over the devices they use, rather than limiting innovation to a small group of companies.
The startup also plans to open its platform to makers and the open-source community, allowing more experimentation around AI hardware concepts.
AI Hardware Still Faces Big Questions
The AI gadget market remains early and uncertain. The report noted that Humane was sold to HP, Rabbit has gone quiet, and several newer players are still in early stages.
Even so, Era believes that as more real-world use cases emerge, some AI gadgets will gain lasting traction with consumers.
