OpenAI releases GPT-5.5, introducing what the company describes as its smartest and most intuitive model so far. The latest launch adds stronger performance across coding, research, and enterprise tasks while also moving OpenAI closer to its long-discussed superapp strategy.

OpenAI Releases GPT-5.5 With Broader Capabilities

During a media briefing, OpenAI co-founder and president Greg Brockman said the model marks a major step toward more agentic and intuitive computing. He described it as a faster and sharper thinker that uses fewer tokens compared with GPT-5.4.

According to the company, GPT-5.5 is designed for a wide range of use cases. These include enterprise priorities such as agentic coding and knowledge work, along with advanced fields like mathematics and scientific research.

OpenAI also shared benchmark results showing GPT-5.5 outperforming earlier models and competing systems from Google and Anthropic, including Gemini 3.1 Pro and Claude Opus 4.5, according to the company.

GPT-5.5 and the Superapp Ambition

Brockman said the new release is another step toward OpenAI’s superapp concept. The company has previously discussed combining ChatGPT, Codex, and an AI browser into one unified platform built to support enterprise customers.

The idea centers on creating a multi-purpose service that can handle multiple workflows inside a single product rather than requiring separate tools.

Faster Model Rollouts Continue

OpenAI has maintained a rapid release pace, following model launches last month and earlier updates in December and November.

Chief scientist Jakub Pachocki said the company expects notable short-term progress and even stronger gains over the medium term. He added that the past two years had been surprisingly slow in comparison to what may come next.

Scientific Research and Cybersecurity Focus

Chief research officer Mark Chen said GPT-5.5 performs better than earlier models in computer-based tasks and shows meaningful gains in scientific and technical research workflows. He added that the model could help expert scientists make progress and may support drug discovery efforts.

When asked about cybersecurity capabilities in comparison with Anthropic’s Mythos, OpenAI technical staff member Mia Glaese said the company has a long-standing cyber strategy and continues refining how advanced models are deployed safely for digital defense.

Availability of GPT-5.5

GPT-5.5 became widely available on Thursday, according to OpenAI. The company said the model is rolling out to Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise users in ChatGPT, while GPT-5.5 Pro is being made available to Pro, Business, and Enterprise customers.
