The OpenAI AI phone could become one of the boldest moves yet in consumer technology, with a new analyst note suggesting the company may be developing a smartphone built around AI agents instead of traditional apps. If accurate, the idea would signal a major shift in how users interact with mobile devices.
Why the OpenAI AI Phone Is Drawing Attention
Industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said OpenAI may be working on a phone alongside MediaTek, Qualcomm, and Luxshare. According to the note, MediaTek and Qualcomm would help develop the smartphone chip, while Luxshare would support co-design and manufacturing.
The report adds to ongoing speculation around OpenAI’s hardware roadmap, which had previously focused on earbuds.
OpenAI AI Phone Could Replace Traditional Apps
One of the most interesting claims is that the device may rely on AI agents to complete tasks rather than conventional apps. Instead of opening separate apps for messaging, booking, shopping, or productivity, users could ask AI agents to handle actions directly.
According to the note, this would allow OpenAI to control its own hardware and software stack rather than operating inside systems managed by Apple or Google.
Context Awareness and Mixed AI Models
Kuo also said the smartphone could be designed to continuously understand user context. That means the device may respond based on habits, preferences, and real-time needs more effectively than a standalone app.
The analyst added that the product could combine smaller on-device AI models with cloud-based models, allowing different requests to be handled in different ways depending on complexity.
Timeline for the Device
According to the note, final smartphone specifications and component suppliers may be decided by the end of this year or by the first quarter of 2027. Mass production is expected to begin in 2028.
Earlier this year, OpenAI Chief Global Affairs Officer Chris Lehane said the company was on track to announce its first hardware product in the second half of 2026. At the time, several reports pointed to uniquely designed earbuds.

The idea of moving beyond apps is not limited to OpenAI. The original report noted that some leaders in the tech space are also predicting a future where apps become less central as AI systems take over more tasks directly.
