DeepMind’s David Silver raises $1.1B for AI that learns without human data, launching one of the biggest new bets in artificial intelligence. His startup, Ineffable Intelligence, is aiming to build a “superlearner” that can develop knowledge and skills through experience rather than relying on human-created datasets.
Why DeepMind’s David Silver Raises $1.1B for AI That Learns Without Human Data
Ineffable Intelligence, founded only months ago by former DeepMind researcher David Silver, has secured $1.1 billion in funding at a $5.1 billion valuation, according to the report.
The funding places the British startup among the fastest-rising AI companies and highlights strong investor appetite for next-generation model research.
The Vision Behind the Startup
According to its website, the company wants to create a superlearner capable of discovering knowledge and skills without using human data.
Instead, the approach relies on reinforcement learning, where AI systems improve through trial and error rather than studying human-generated examples. That has long been Silver’s core area of expertise.
David Silver’s DeepMind Legacy
Before launching the company, Silver spent more than a decade at Google-owned DeepMind and recently led its reinforcement learning team.
He was involved in building systems that defeated elite players in games such as chess and Go by learning from experience alone. The best-known example was AlphaZero, which became a landmark project in AI research.

The report said the round was led by Sequoia Capital and Lightspeed Venture Partners, with participation from Index Ventures, Google, Nvidia, and others.
Additional backers reportedly included the British Business Bank and Sovereign AI, a recently launched U.K. sovereign venture fund focused on AI.
London’s Growing Role in AI
The rise of Ineffable Intelligence also points to increasing momentum around London as a major AI hub.
The report noted that DeepMind’s long-standing presence in the city, along with a strong alumni network, is helping fuel new startups and fresh investment activity.
What Comes Next
The company’s scientific ambition is clear, though its commercial path remains uncertain. For now, investors appear willing to back bold research aimed at pushing beyond current large language model approaches.
That makes this one of the most closely watched AI startups to emerge this year.
