SpaceX Terafab Project Could Cost $119 Billion for Massive Texas Chip Factory

SpaceX Terafab plans are drawing major attention after new filings revealed Elon Musk’s company could invest as much as $119 billion into a massive semiconductor manufacturing project in Texas.

According to a proposal listed on the Grimes County website, SpaceX is initially considering spending $55 billion to launch the first phase of the project. The broader initiative could eventually grow into one of the largest semiconductor manufacturing efforts tied to artificial intelligence infrastructure.

SpaceX Terafab Project Targets AI Chip Production

The proposed SpaceX Terafab facility is described as a “multi-phase, next-generation, vertically integrated semiconductor manufacturing and advanced computing fabrication facility.”

The project would reportedly involve collaboration between SpaceX, Tesla, and chipmaking giant Intel.

Musk has argued that current semiconductor production is not moving fast enough to support growing AI and robotics demands.

“We either build the Terafab or we don’t have the chips, and we need the chips, so we build the Terafab,” Musk wrote in a previous post.

Texas Site Still Under Consideration

While Grimes County, Texas, has emerged as a potential location for the project, Musk clarified on Wednesday that the county is only one of several sites under review for the semiconductor facility.

The filing nonetheless highlights how aggressively Musk’s companies are pushing to secure AI computing resources and chip supply chains.

The SpaceX Terafab initiative comes as Musk expands the computing infrastructure behind xAI and its Grok family of AI models.

AI Demand Continues to Drive Infrastructure Expansion

The proposed factory also aligns with Musk’s broader ambitions around artificial intelligence and high-performance computing.

Reports indicate Musk wants to capitalize on growing demand for AI compute power, including plans tied to future space-based data centers.

The combined SpaceX and xAI entity is reportedly valued at around $1.25 trillion and is expected to go public in June.

If approved and fully developed, the SpaceX Terafab project could become one of the largest AI-focused semiconductor manufacturing facilities ever proposed in the United States.
