Google has unveiled its latest experiment in creative AI with the launch of Mixboard, an AI-powered mood board app designed to compete with platforms like Pinterest.

Mixboard, currently available in public beta in the U.S. through Google Labs, enables users to generate personalized mood boards using text prompts rather than relying on pre-saved images. For those seeking inspiration, the app also offers pre-populated boards that can be customized with ease.

The tool builds on Google’s advanced image editing model, Nano Banana, which has been praised for its ability to perform detailed, realistic edits. Users can not only generate fresh images but also ask the AI to make adjustments, combine visuals, or even “regenerate” boards for new ideas. The app also supports text generation based on the visuals, allowing for deeper creative exploration.

Google suggests Mixboard could be particularly useful for brainstorming ideas around home décor, event planning, DIY projects, and more.

The launch positions Mixboard as a potential challenger to Pinterest’s collage feature and follows a wave of interest in digital mood boards among Gen Z users. Pinterest’s standalone app Shuffles previously went viral for enabling creative TikTok content, while startups like Verse and Landing (now closed) also experimented with AI-driven design tools. Fashion marketplace Depop recently introduced a collage tool to help users style their collections, underscoring the growing demand in this space.

By integrating Nano Banana into Mixboard, Google is meeting rising user demand while tapping into younger audiences eager to experiment with digital creativity.
