Spotify to Label AI Music, Block Voice Clones, and Fight Spam in Major AI Policy Shift

Spotify is cracking down on AI misuse with a sweeping policy update that will label AI-generated music, block unauthorized voice clones, and deploy new tools to stop spam content on its platform.

The company announced Thursday that it will adopt the upcoming DDEX industry standard for AI music labeling. This will allow artists, labels, and distributors to disclose when AI is used — whether for vocals, instrumentation, or post-production — without forcing a “yes or no” classification on tracks.

“AI will be part of music creation in many different ways,” said Sam Duboff, Spotify’s Global Head of Marketing and Policy. “This new standard ensures transparency without penalizing authentic creativity.”

Spotify Bans Unauthorized AI Voice Clones

Alongside labeling changes, Spotify made its stance clear: unauthorized AI-generated voice clones, deepfakes, and impersonations are not allowed on the platform.

Tracks violating these rules will be removed to protect artists and prevent misuse of their identities.

Fighting AI Music Spam with New Filters

With AI making it easy to mass-upload tracks, Spotify is rolling out a new music spam filter this fall.

The tool will:

  • Flag duplicate or misleading content
  • Stop recommending spam tracks
  • Work with distributors to prevent “profile mismatches,” where music is fraudulently uploaded under another artist’s name

Duboff emphasized that AI-powered spam has grown more sophisticated:

“We’ve fought spam for years, but AI accelerates the problem. We need stronger defenses.”

Supporting AI Creativity, Not Abuse

Despite the crackdown, Spotify supports responsible AI use for creativity.

“We want AI to empower artists, not bad actors gaming the system,” said Charlie Hellman, Spotify’s VP and Global Head of Music. “Protecting the platform helps everyone benefit from authentic AI innovation.”

Industry Context

The changes come amid a surge in AI music. Rival Deezer recently reported that 18% of tracks uploaded daily are fully AI-generated. Spotify hasn’t shared its numbers but confirmed the trend is industry-wide.

With DDEX adoption and new anti-spam measures, Spotify aims to lead the way in balancing AI creativity with platform integrity.
