Anthropic Mythos NSA use is reportedly taking place, with the National Security Agency said to be using Mythos Preview, a recently announced AI model from Anthropic that was not released to the public.

According to Axios, the development comes just weeks after the NSA’s parent agency, the Department of Defense, labeled Anthropic a “supply chain risk.” That dispute followed Anthropic’s refusal to grant Pentagon officials unrestricted access to the full capabilities of its models.

What is Mythos Preview?

Anthropic introduced Mythos earlier this month as a frontier AI model built for cybersecurity tasks. The company said the system was too capable of offensive cyberattacks to be made publicly available.

Because of that risk, Anthropic limited Mythos access to around 40 organizations. The company has publicly identified only a portion of those recipients.

How the NSA is reportedly using Mythos

The report says the NSA is primarily using Mythos to scan environments for exploitable vulnerabilities. That suggests the model is being applied in defensive cybersecurity operations rather than public-facing use cases.

The AI Security Institute in the UK has also confirmed it has access to Mythos.

Pentagon legal stance adds complexity

The reported use of Anthropic tools by U.S. military agencies comes while the government is also arguing in court that such tools could pose national security risks.

The Pentagon’s disagreement with Anthropic reportedly began after the company declined to make Claude available for mass domestic surveillance and autonomous weapons development.

White House meeting signals warmer ties

The NSA’s reported access to Mythos also comes as Anthropic’s relationship with the Trump administration appears to be improving.

Last Friday, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei reportedly met with Susie Wiles and Scott Bessent. The White House reportedly described the meeting as productive.
