The Apple CEO successor John Ternus story marks one of the biggest leadership changes in tech this year, as Apple named longtime hardware chief John Ternus as its next chief executive.

The company said Ternus will become CEO on September 1, while Tim Cook will remain as executive chairman. The transition comes as Apple faces growing pressure to compete in a technology landscape increasingly shaped by AI.

Ternus joined Apple in 2001 and has played a major role in several of the company’s flagship products, including the Mac, iPads, and AirPods.

His biggest challenge may be integrating AI more effectively into the iPhone and Apple’s broader ecosystem. The report noted that Apple has trailed rivals in delivering a breakout hardware or software product built around new AI technologies.

Earlier this year, Apple reached an agreement with Google to use Gemini in an effort to improve Siri. Siri, introduced in 2011, has yet to become what AI companies describe as an “agent” capable of handling more complex tasks.

Apple Raised Ternus’ Public Profile Recently

Apple has increasingly put Ternus in the spotlight in recent years. He spoke publicly about company products and presented the iPhone Air in September, described in the report as the biggest redesign of Apple’s top-selling product in nearly a decade.

Analysts cited in the report said the leadership change may signal a stronger focus on future hardware categories such as folding phones, glasses, VR devices, and AI-focused products.

Cook’s tenure reshaped Apple financially. The report said Apple’s market value increased by $3.6 trillion during his 15 years as CEO, while the stock rose around 20-fold since he took over in August 2011.

He also became known for building Apple’s global supply chain and expanding operations in countries including China, India, and Vietnam.

Other Leadership Changes at Apple

Apple also announced that Johny Srouji has been named chief hardware officer. He will continue overseeing Apple’s custom chip and sensor design teams, while the hardware engineering group previously led by Ternus will now be overseen by Tom Merieb.
