Mac mini AI shortage is driving a surprising resale boom, with marked-up listings flooding eBay after Apple’s sold-out M4 Mac mini became a favorite machine for running local AI models at home.
Mac mini AI Shortage Sparks Secondary Market Rush
Reports this week said the $599 M4 Mac mini base model with 16GB RAM and 256GB storage is sold out on Apple’s retail website, with no delivery or in-store pickup options available.
The shortages have also expanded to other base-model configurations, regardless of memory options. Meanwhile, higher-storage versions with 512GB or more are reportedly shipping starting in June.
That has pushed buyers toward resale platforms, where the same machines are appearing at significantly higher prices.
Why the Mac mini Became Popular for AI
The Mac mini AI shortage is closely tied to growing demand from users running on-device AI models. The report says Apple’s compact desktop has become a popular option for experimenting with tools such as OpenClaw, ZeroClaw, models from Anthropic and OpenAI, Perplexity Computer, and other specialized local AI systems.
Its appeal goes beyond raw performance. The Mac mini is described as power-efficient, quiet, and reliable for 24/7 workloads, making it attractive for home AI setups.
eBay Prices Climb Above Retail
With direct purchases unavailable, resale prices have moved well above Apple’s starting price.
According to the report, new “open box” M4 base models with 16GB RAM and 256GB SSD were selling between $715 and $795. Refurbished units in excellent condition were listed as high as $979.
Even lightly used systems were selling for around $700, which is more than $100 above the original retail price.
One listing for a brand-new unit was priced at $925 and highlighted that it was the “Last one.”
Supply Pressure and Wider Demand
The Mac mini AI shortage is also arriving alongside an industry-wide memory crunch and expectations of a Mac mini refresh, according to the report. However, previous product refresh cycles did not create similar shortages.
The report also noted that demand is now spilling into the Mac Studio lineup, with several configurations also sold out.
What It Means for Buyers
Other Apple devices appear to remain more available. Reports indicate certain MacBook Pro models and the newer MacBook Neo are still shipping within a few weeks.
That suggests the current pressure may be less about Apple’s overall supply and more about unusually strong demand for the Mac mini itself.
