SAP AI Lab Investment Hits $1.16B as Company Acquires Prior Labs

SAP AI lab investment plans are accelerating as SAP moves to acquire German startup Prior Labs and commit €1 billion, or roughly $1.16 billion, to building a new AI-focused research lab.

SAP AI Lab Investment Focuses on Structured Data

The SAP AI lab investment centers on structured data, which includes the tables and databases used across enterprise systems like accounting, HR, procurement, and expense management.

Prior Labs specializes in tabular foundation models, or TFMs, which are designed to make predictions using structured business data rather than relying primarily on language models.

SAP AI Lab Investment Includes Prior Labs Acquisition

Although SAP did not disclose the acquisition price, reports cited by Pathfounders described it as a major exit for Prior Labs’ founders Frank Hutter, Noah Hollmann, and Sauraj Gambhir.

The startup was founded just 18 months ago and quickly gained traction through its open-source TabPFN model series, which the company says has been downloaded more than three million times.

SAP AI Lab Investment Comes Amid AI Pressure

The SAP AI lab investment arrives as enterprise software companies face increasing pressure from the rise of agentic AI.

SAP’s stock has reportedly been affected by what some in the industry are calling the “SaaSpocalypse,” reflecting concerns about how AI could reshape traditional enterprise software.

SAP Restricts Unauthorized AI Agents

As part of its broader AI strategy, SAP has also limited access to unauthorized AI agents through its APIs.

According to the company’s API policy, only “SAP-endorsed architectures” are permitted to access SAP products via AI agents.

This policy excludes systems like OpenClaw unless explicitly approved. However, SAP customers will be able to use Nvidia’s NemoClaw-related tooling through SAP’s Joule Agents platform.

SAP Expands Enterprise AI Ecosystem

The SAP AI lab investment builds on the company’s earlier moves into generative AI.

SAP has previously backed AI companies, including Anthropic, Aleph Alpha, and Cohere, while also developing its own relational pretrained transformer model called SAP-RPT-1.

SAP CTO Philipp Herzig said the company identified structured data as one of the biggest opportunities in enterprise AI.

Independent AI Research With Product Integration

SAP stated that Prior Labs will continue operating as an independent unit to maintain research speed while integrating its technology into SAP’s broader product ecosystem.

This includes SAP AI Core, SAP Business Data Cloud, and the company’s Joule agent layer.

Why This Matters

The SAP AI lab investment highlights how enterprise software giants are adapting to the AI era by focusing on structured business data and agent-based systems.

As AI competition intensifies, SAP’s strategy shows a balance between investing in open AI research and tightly controlling how external AI agents interact with its ecosystem.
