Crypto.com’s $70M AI.com Domain Bet Signals a Super Bowl-Scale AI Play

Crypto.com has placed one of the boldest bets in internet history, acquiring the AI.com domain for a staggering $70 million, just days ahead of the Super Bowl.

According to the Financial Times, the all-crypto transaction makes the AI.com domain the most expensive domain name ever sold, eclipsing previous record-holders and underlining how aggressively major tech players are positioning themselves around artificial intelligence.

The buyer, Crypto.com founder and CEO Kris Marszalek, plans to unveil the platform during Sunday’s Super Bowl broadcast—an event where ad slots alone can cost millions. The site is expected to launch with a personal AI agent designed to help users with messaging, app interactions, and even stock trading.

“If you take a long-term view—10 to 20 years—AI is going to be one of the greatest technological waves of our lifetime,” Marszalek told the Financial Times, framing the AI.com domain purchase as a generational investment rather than a short-term marketing stunt.

Why the AI.com Domain Matters

The AI.com domain isn’t just expensive—it’s irreplaceable. In the world of digital real estate, category-defining domains often become default destinations for consumer attention, much like Crypto.com did for cryptocurrency.

Domain broker Larry Fischer, who facilitated the sale, summed it up simply: “With assets like AI.com, there are no substitutes. When one becomes available, the opportunity may never present itself again.”

The deal resets the domain-name record books. Previous top sales included CarInsurance.com ($49.7 million), VacationRentals.com ($35 million), and Voice.com ($30 million). With the AI.com domain now at $70 million, the gap between first and second place is enormous.

A Familiar Crypto.com Strategy—Go Big or Go Home

For Crypto.com, this move fits a clear pattern. The company previously spent $700 million on stadium naming rights, turning a once-obscure brand into a household name during the last crypto boom.

Now, by pairing the AI.com domain with a Super Bowl debut, Marszalek appears to be applying the same playbook—only this time, the focus is artificial intelligence instead of digital assets.

The upcoming platform is expected to offer a freemium model, with advanced AI agent features unlocked through paid subscriptions. Future plans reportedly include deeper financial integrations, agent marketplaces, and expanded automation capabilities.

Will a $70M Domain Pay Off?

Whether the AI.com domain ultimately delivers a return remains an open question. History shows that not every high-priced domain becomes a runaway success. But Marszalek’s strategy suggests confidence that AI agents will become a daily consumer utility, much like smartphones or browsers.

With AI adoption accelerating—and the Super Bowl providing unmatched visibility—Crypto.com is betting that owning the most powerful domain in AI will give it a lasting advantage.

If that bet pays off, the AI.com domain may one day look like a bargain.
