The Google Voluntary Exit Program has been introduced for employees in specific business units, according to an internal memo shared by the company’s chief business officer, Philipp Schindler. The initiative offers eligible employees the option to leave the company voluntarily with a severance package.
The announcement, reportedly sent to staff within Google’s global business organization (GBO), outlines eligibility rules, workforce expectations, and the company’s increasing focus on artificial intelligence adoption.
Google Highlights Strong Performance but Signals Change
Schindler’s memo began by thanking employees for their contributions, noting that Google is starting the year from a position of strength following achievements in 2025.
However, he emphasized that the business environment is evolving rapidly, describing the current landscape as fast-moving and highly competitive. The message underscores Google’s intent to adapt quickly to shifting industry demands.
The introduction of the Google Voluntary Exit Program reflects this broader push to align workforce priorities with the company’s future direction.
Employees Urged to Embrace AI Across Operations
A central theme in the memo was the company’s emphasis on artificial intelligence. Schindler made it clear that employees within the global business organization are expected to fully embrace AI technologies.
The memo encouraged staff to be “all in” on the company’s mission by adopting AI tools to drive greater impact and productivity. This directive highlights Google’s growing reliance on AI to shape its operations and strategic priorities.
The Google Voluntary Exit Program appears partly aligned with this transition toward AI-focused workflows.
Program Targets Employees Ready to Move On
According to the memo, the Google Voluntary Exit Program is designed for employees who may not be comfortable with the company’s pace of work or those considering leaving the organization.
The program applies to certain roles within the U.S.-based global business organization, including employees working in solutions teams, sales, corporate development, and related functions.
By offering voluntary separation, Google aims to provide flexibility while adjusting its workforce structure.
Customer-Facing Roles Excluded From the Program
The memo also clarified that some employees are not eligible for the Google Voluntary Exit Program. Large customer sales teams and other customer-facing positions have been excluded.
Google stated that these roles are essential to maintaining service continuity and minimizing disruption for clients. While all GBO functions remain important to the company’s long-term strategy, leadership decided to protect customer operations from potential workforce changes.
Part of Google’s Broader Workforce Restructuring Trend
This is not the first time Google has offered voluntary buyouts to employees. The company has implemented similar programs in recent years as part of organizational restructuring efforts.
In June 2025, Google offered buyouts to certain U.S.-based employees while enforcing its return-to-office policy. Later in October 2025, the company extended buyout offers to YouTube employees during a reorganization initiative.
The latest Google Voluntary Exit Program continues this pattern of workforce adjustments as the company navigates technological shifts and evolving business priorities.
