Google voluntary exit packages are now being offered to certain employees as the company sharpens its focus on artificial intelligence and operational intensity.
In an internal email sent Tuesday (Feb. 10), Chief Business Officer Philipp Schindler informed employees within Google’s Global Business Organisation (GBO) that some teams are eligible for voluntary exit packages (VEP). The message made it clear: the company expects teams to fully embrace AI as part of its future growth strategy.
AI Push Raises the Stakes
As Google voluntary exit packages roll out, Schindler emphasized that artificial intelligence will define the company’s next chapter.
“We’re starting the year in a strong position thanks to everything you accomplished in 2025, but the game is dynamic, the pace is electric, and the stakes are high,” Schindler wrote in the memo obtained by Business Insider.
He stressed that everyone in GBO must be “all in” and actively embracing AI to drive impact. Employees who are not enjoying the current pace or feel ready to move on were invited to consider the buyout option.
The message underscores how central AI has become to Google’s strategy — not just as a product line, but as an internal performance benchmark.
Who Is Eligible?
The Google voluntary exit packages are being offered to employees working in solutions teams, sales, corporate development, and select other roles within the GBO.
However, customer-facing teams and customer sales roles are not eligible for the program. According to Schindler, this exclusion is designed to minimize disruption to clients.
“While all GBO functions are essential to our long-term strategy, we’ve decided not to offer VEP for these particular roles to limit as much disruption to our customers as possible,” he wrote.
Details on the exact severance terms remain unclear. In a previous buyout initiative last year, Google reportedly offered at least 14 weeks of pay plus an additional week for every full year of service.
Why Companies Prefer Buyouts
The decision to introduce Google voluntary exit packages instead of immediate layoffs reflects a broader corporate trend.
Buyouts provide a voluntary alternative to mass layoffs, helping companies reduce headcount with less reputational risk. They also lower the likelihood of legal challenges and can help organizations avoid regulatory requirements tied to large-scale layoffs in the U.S.
This is not the first time Google has used this approach. In June last year, employees in the Knowledge and Information division and central engineering teams were offered voluntary exits as part of workforce streamlining efforts. In October, YouTube staff were also offered buyouts during a restructuring phase.
AI as a Cultural Filter
The rollout of Google voluntary exit packages signals more than cost-cutting — it reflects a cultural shift.
By explicitly linking eligibility to whether employees are embracing AI, Google is effectively drawing a line between those aligned with its AI-driven future and those who may not be.
With tech layoffs continuing across the industry, Google’s strategy suggests that AI adoption is no longer optional — it is now a defining criterion for long-term relevance inside major tech firms.
