OpenAI India data center expansion is gaining momentum as the company partners with the Tata Group to secure 100 megawatts of AI-ready data center capacity, with plans to scale up to 1 gigawatt. OpenAI India Data Center Partnership With Tata Group

The OpenAI India data center partnership will make OpenAI the first customer of Tata Consultancy Services’ HyperVault data center business. The collaboration begins with 100 megawatts of compute capacity designed specifically for AI workloads.

Beyond infrastructure, the agreement includes deploying ChatGPT Enterprise across Tata’s workforce and standardizing AI-native software development using OpenAI tools. The initiative falls under the company’s “OpenAI for India” program, reflecting its expanding presence in the country.

India has become a critical growth market for OpenAI, with CEO Sam Altman previously noting that the country has more than 100 million weekly ChatGPT users, including students, developers, and entrepreneurs.

Why Local AI Infrastructure Matters

The OpenAI India data center investment allows the company to run advanced AI models within the country, reducing latency and supporting data residency requirements. Local hosting is particularly important for enterprises and government sectors that handle sensitive data and must comply with strict regulatory frameworks.

By enabling in-country processing, OpenAI aims to attract more enterprise customers that require secure and compliant infrastructure.

Tata plans to roll out ChatGPT Enterprise across its workforce over the coming years, starting with hundreds of thousands of employees at Tata Consultancy Services (TCS). The deployment could become one of the largest enterprise AI implementations globally.

TCS also intends to use OpenAI’s Codex tools to standardize AI-native software development across engineering teams, strengthening automation and productivity.

Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran said the partnership will help build advanced AI infrastructure in India while supporting workforce skilling initiatives for the AI-driven economy.

Investment and Infrastructure Expansion Plans

Financial details of the OpenAI India data center deal were not disclosed, including whether OpenAI is leasing capacity or making a capital investment in Tata’s HyperVault platform.

The data center initiative builds on TCS’s earlier plans to develop AI-ready infrastructure in India, supported by private equity firm TPG. The HyperVault platform is backed by approximately ₹180 billion (around $2 billion) in planned investment to support large-scale compute workloads.

Certification Programs and Workforce Development

OpenAI will also expand its professional certification programs in India, with TCS becoming the first participating organization outside the United States. The certifications aim to help professionals build practical AI skills across industries.

The company recently partnered with leading Indian institutions in engineering, medicine, and design, highlighting its broader focus on education and workforce readiness.

Expanding OpenAI’s India Presence

To strengthen its regional operations, OpenAI plans to open new offices in Mumbai and Bengaluru later this year, adding to its existing base in New Delhi. The expansion will support enterprise partnerships, developer engagement, and regulatory coordination.

The announcement coincides with India’s AI Impact Summit in New Delhi, where global AI leaders including Sam Altman, Dario Amodei, and Sundar Pichai are participating alongside Indian startups showcasing AI applications across finance, healthcare, and education.
