OpenAI Pine Labs Partnership Expands AI-Driven Payments in India’s Fintech Sector

OpenAI is strengthening its presence in India through a new OpenAI Pine Labs partnership that aims to integrate AI-driven reasoning into the fintech company’s payments infrastructure. The collaboration focuses on automating settlement, reconciliation, and invoicing workflows — a move both companies say could accelerate AI-led commerce across India.

The OpenAI Pine Labs partnership reflects the AI company’s broader strategy to embed its technology deeper into enterprise systems, infrastructure, and financial services in one of its fastest-growing global markets.

OpenAI Pine Labs Partnership Targets AI-Driven Payments

Under the OpenAI Pine Labs partnership, Pine Labs will integrate OpenAI’s application programming interfaces (APIs) into its payments and commerce stack. These tools allow businesses to embed AI capabilities directly into existing financial systems.

The integration is designed to enable AI-assisted workflows for settlement processing, reconciliation, and invoicing. The companies aim to streamline financial operations by reducing manual intervention and improving processing efficiency across payment ecosystems.

The collaboration comes as India positions itself as a global hub for applied artificial intelligence, with companies increasingly adopting AI technologies to optimize operational processes and scale digital commerce.

Automating Settlement and Financial Workflows

Pine Labs has already been using AI internally to automate portions of its financial operations. According to CEO B Amrish Rau, AI-driven systems have significantly reduced settlement processing times — cutting daily clearing cycles from hours to minutes.

Previously, the company relied on manual checks by teams of employees to process funds from multiple banks before market opening. With the OpenAI Pine Labs partnership, these AI capabilities will now extend beyond internal operations to merchants and enterprise clients.

The initial focus will be on business-to-business use cases such as invoice processing, payment orchestration, and settlements. Rau emphasized that AI adoption is likely to grow faster in B2B environments where repetitive financial tasks can be managed by automated agents operating under defined rules.

He noted that efficiency improvements in enterprise workflows represent one of the most impactful use cases of AI in financial services.

Gradual Rollout of AI Commerce in India

The OpenAI Pine Labs partnership will roll out AI-driven payment capabilities differently across regions due to regulatory differences.

While markets in the Middle East and Southeast Asia may see faster adoption of autonomous payment workflows, India is expected to implement AI-assisted commerce more gradually because of stricter regulatory controls around payment authorization.

Pine Labs is already testing agent-driven payment systems in overseas markets, while Indian deployments will focus on AI-supported financial processes rather than fully automated transactions.

Expanding OpenAI’s Enterprise Footprint in India

The OpenAI Pine Labs partnership also supports OpenAI’s broader expansion strategy in India. The company is moving beyond consumer applications like ChatGPT to embed AI into enterprise infrastructure, education, and financial systems.

Earlier this week, OpenAI partnered with major Indian academic institutions to integrate AI tools into higher education programs. The company is betting that India’s large developer ecosystem and growing internet user base will play a central role in global AI adoption.

Through its collaboration with Pine Labs, OpenAI gains deeper access to India’s payments ecosystem and enterprise market, enabling its AI models to operate within high-volume financial workflows.

Pine Labs Strengthens Its Commerce Platform Strategy

For Pine Labs, the OpenAI Pine Labs partnership is aimed at expanding its role beyond payment processing into a broader AI-powered commerce platform.

The fintech company works with over 980,000 merchants, 716 consumer brands, and 177 financial institutions across 20 countries. It has processed more than six billion transactions valued at over ₹11.4 trillion, according to its prospectus.

By embedding AI capabilities into its infrastructure, Pine Labs aims to increase merchant engagement, improve transaction efficiency, and scale its global commerce operations.

The partnership does not include revenue sharing and remains non-exclusive, allowing Pine Labs to collaborate with other AI providers in the future.

Security and Compliance in AI-Powered Payments

As part of the OpenAI Pine Labs partnership, Pine Labs is building additional security and compliance frameworks around AI-driven workflows. The company aims to protect sensitive merchant and consumer transaction data while ensuring that automated financial processes meet regulatory standards.

Pine Labs has previously experimented with AI-powered payment experiences through its Setu unit, which tested agent-based bill payments using chatbots such as ChatGPT and Anthropic’s Claude. India also began piloting consumer payments through AI chatbots last year, signaling growing interest in AI-driven financial services.

The announcement coincides with India’s AI Impact Summit in New Delhi, where global AI companies are showcasing technologies designed for large-scale deployment across industries including finance, healthcare, and education.
