India App Market Growth Surges as Global Platforms Win Bigger Revenue Share

India App Market Growth is hitting new highs, with in-app purchases crossing $300 million in the first quarter, up 33% year over year, according to Sensor Tower. While that signals strong momentum, much of the revenue is going to global platforms rather than local players.

The latest figures show India’s mobile ecosystem is expanding beyond downloads and moving into stronger monetization, as users spend more time on apps and grow more comfortable paying for digital services.

India App Market Growth Driven by Non-Gaming Apps

Non-gaming apps were the biggest growth engine in the first quarter.

According to Sensor Tower, these apps generated more than $200 million in in-app purchase revenue, up 44% year over year. Their share of total spending also increased, led by categories such as utilities, video streaming, and generative AI.

This marks a notable shift in a market that was once heavily defined by app installs rather than paid usage.

Revenue Has More Than Doubled Since 2021

India’s app economy has expanded rapidly over the last few years.

Sensor Tower said annual in-app purchase revenue rose from $520 million in 2021 to more than $1 billion in 2025. It is projected to reach $1.25 billion this year.

At the same time, downloads have stabilized at around 25 billion annually. That suggests the next phase of India App Market Growth is being powered more by engagement and spending than by new installs.

Global Platforms Lead the Earnings Charts

Even with strong local demand, international companies are taking a large share of the gains.

Top revenue earners in the first quarter included Google One, Facebook, ChatGPT, and YouTube. Indian companies were more visible in video streaming, where JioHotstar and SonyLIV ranked among leading apps.

A similar trend appeared in downloads. ChatGPT, Instagram, and FreeReels were among the market leaders, followed by Indian apps such as Story TV, JioHotstar, and Meesho.

Monetization Still Lags Other Regions

Despite rapid progress, India remains a lower-spending mobile market compared with other regions.

Sensor Tower data shared with TechCrunch showed India generates about $0.03 in revenue per download. That compares with more than $0.20 in Southeast Asia and Latin America.

This means India App Market Growth still has room to expand if user spending continues to rise.

AI and Short Drama Apps Are Expanding Fast

New categories are helping reshape the market.

Generative AI app downloads increased 69% year over year, with ChatGPT ranking among the top apps for both installs and revenue. India has long been ChatGPT’s largest market by users, while other AI apps are also gaining traction.

Short drama apps are growing even faster, with downloads up more than 400%, led by platforms like FreeReels.

These trends suggest India’s mobile economy is still early in its monetization journey, even as fresh categories create new reasons for users to pay.
