India has become the global epicenter of generative AI adoption. But the real question now is whether India AI app market monetization can catch up with the explosive growth in users.
In 2025, India emerged as the world’s largest market for generative AI app installs, according to market intelligence firm Sensor Tower. The country widened its lead over the United States as downloads jumped 207% year over year. That surge positioned GenAI app downloads India at the center of the global AI growth story.
Yet revenue tells a very different story.
GenAI App Downloads India Surge, Revenue Lags
Sensor Tower data shared with TechCrunch shows that India accounted for roughly 20% of global GenAI app downloads in 2025. However, the country contributed only about 1% of total in-app purchase revenue.
This gap highlights the core tension behind India AI app market monetization. Adoption is massive. Monetization remains limited.
Download growth accelerated sharply through September and October 2025, when year-over-year install growth reached roughly 320% and 260%, respectively. New platform launches such as DeepSeek, Grok and Meta AI, alongside upgrades to ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity, fueled momentum. Viral interest in AI-generated content also played a role, with content creation and editing apps ranking among the most downloaded tools.
But while GenAI app downloads India skyrocketed, revenue momentum softened.
ChatGPT India Free Offer Conversion Under Pressure
Promotional strategies have shaped the market. Companies including OpenAI, Google and Perplexity rolled out extended free premium offers to accelerate user acquisition in India’s price-sensitive environment.
Perplexity ended its bundled Pro offer with telecom provider Airtel in January. free ChatGPT Go access in India has also been withdrawn. That makes ChatGPT India free offer conversion a critical metric to watch in the coming months.
Sensor Tower data indicates that AI app in-app purchase revenue in India declined 22% in November and 18% in December 2025 on a month-over-month basis. ChatGPT revenue fell even more sharply — down 33% and 32% during the same period following the rollout of its sub-$5 free-tier access in November.
Despite the drop, ChatGPT still commands over 60% of GenAI in-app revenue in India, meaning pricing adjustments can significantly influence overall India AI app market monetization trends.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has said the chatbot now has more than 100 million weekly active users in India. Sensor Tower reports that ChatGPT had 180 million monthly active users in January 2026, followed by Google’s Gemini at 118 million, Perplexity at 19 million and Meta AI at 12 million.
India’s Massive Digital Base
India’s appeal is clear. The country has more than one billion internet users and roughly 700 million smartphone owners. That scale makes it one of the largest potential AI markets globally.
According to Sensor Tower insights analyst Sneha Pandey, companies are deliberately reducing pricing friction in India, betting that early adoption will translate into long-term retention once promotional periods end.
However, engagement metrics show a maturity gap. In 2025, U.S. users of leading AI chatbot apps spent about 21% more time per week on these apps compared with Indian users and logged 17% more sessions on average, according to Sensor Tower.
Pandey told TechCrunch that AI in-app revenues in India are likely to improve gradually as users become more deeply integrated into these platforms. Still, she emphasized that sustained engagement will be essential.
The Road Ahead for India AI App Market Monetization
As free trials wind down, the focus shifts squarely to India AI app market monetization. The coming quarters will test whether GenAI app downloads India can translate into durable subscription revenue.
Lower-cost tiers, telecom bundles and micro-transaction models may become central strategies in a young and value-conscious market. The outcome of ChatGPT India free offer conversion efforts could offer an early signal of how sustainable the current growth trajectory really is.
India has already proven it can lead in user adoption. The next chapter will determine whether that scale can evolve into consistent monetization.
