OpenAI Expands Stargate Project with Five New AI Data Centers in the U.S.

OpenAI is scaling up its AI infrastructure in a big way. On Tuesday, the company announced it will build five new Stargate AI data centers across the United States in partnership with Oracle and SoftBank, expanding its capacity to power next-generation AI models.

With the new sites, Stargate’s total planned capacity will reach 7 gigawatts — enough electricity to power more than five million homes. This expansion marks a major step in OpenAI’s mission to support increasingly powerful AI systems.

Where the New AI Data Centers Are Located

OpenAI said three of the new Stargate sites are being developed with Oracle:

Shackelford County, Texas
Doña Ana County, New Mexico
An undisclosed location in the Midwest

The other two sites will be built with SoftBank:

Lordstown, Ohio
Milam County, Texas

Part of a Massive AI Infrastructure Push

The Stargate project is central to OpenAI’s plans to create the infrastructure needed for advanced AI training and deployment.

Just a day earlier, OpenAI revealed it would receive a $100 billion investment from Nvidia to purchase the chipmaker’s AI processors and build additional data centers. Together, these efforts reflect the race to secure computing power as AI models become larger and more demanding.
