His doctoral thesis introduced SPHINX, the world’s first speaker-independent continuous speech recognition system.

Lee began his career as an assistant professor at Carnegie Mellon before transitioning to industry roles. At Apple (1990–1996), he led projects such as PlainTalk (speech recognition) and GalaTea (text-to-speech). He then worked at Silicon Graphics (1996–1998) before founding Microsoft Research Asia in Beijing in 1998, which became one of the world’s premier computer science research labs.

In 2005, Lee joined Google as Vice President and President of Google China. He played a key role in establishing Google’s presence in China by building a team tailored to local user needs.
