While OpenAI’s ChatGPT remains the dominant chatbot, competitor AI models like Google’s Gemini, Microsoft’s Copilot, and xAI’s Grok are rapidly gaining users. New data from analytics firms Similarweb and Sensor Tower highlights the shifting landscape of AI chatbot adoption, with emerging players seeing significant increases in web and mobile traffic.
AI Chatbot Usage on the Rise
According to Similarweb, which tracks web traffic analytics, several AI chatbots saw notable growth in March 2025:
- Google’s Gemini recorded 10.9 million average daily visits, up 7.4% from February.
- Microsoft’s Copilot, powered by OpenAI’s technology, reached 2.4 million daily visits, marking a 2.1% increase.
- Anthropic’s Claude saw 3.3 million daily visits, demonstrating continued adoption.
- China-based DeepSeek’s chatbot recorded 16.5 million daily visits, despite a 25% traffic decline from February.
- xAI’s Grok, backed by Elon Musk, achieved the same 16.5 million daily visits, reflecting a staggering 800% month-over-month growth.
Despite these gains, ChatGPT remains the undisputed leader, surpassing 500 million weekly active users in late March. However, analysts believe the battle for the No. 2 AI chatbot spot is heating up.
“China’s DeepSeek came out of nowhere in January, but the AI platform with the greatest momentum at the moment is Grok from Elon Musk’s xAI,” said David Carr, editor at Similarweb.
AI Chatbot Mobile Apps See Surging Growth
The rise of mobile AI chatbots has been equally striking. Sensor Tower data reveals that recent AI model releases have driven significant spikes in mobile chatbot app usage:
- Anthropic’s Claude app saw a 21% week-over-week increase in weekly active users during the week of February 24, coinciding with the launch of Claude 3.7 Sonnet.
- Google’s Gemini app experienced a 42% jump in weekly active users shortly after the release of Gemini 2.0 Flash.
Analysts attribute this surge not only to new AI model upgrades but also to enhanced functionality in chatbot platforms.
“The introduction of various new features, growing consumer interest, and the expanding number of AI use cases have propelled chatbot app adoption,” said Abraham Yousef, senior insights analyst at Sensor Tower.
For instance, Google’s Gemini recently introduced a “canvas” feature, allowing users to preview coding outputs, while Anthropic has steadily integrated new tools into its Claude client.
ChatGPT Still Dominates, But Competition Intensifies
Even with its growing competition, OpenAI’s ChatGPT still leads the market by a wide margin. Sensor Tower’s data shows that ChatGPT had 10x more mobile app weekly active users compared to Gemini and Claude combined as of March.
However, the expanding AI chatbot ecosystem suggests that alternative platforms are slowly chipping away at OpenAI’s dominance. With AI companies continuously refining their models and introducing new capabilities, the chatbot wars are far from over.
