In a recent case reported by Slate, a man named Adam Thomas described how his reliance on AI-driven advice spiraled into a months-long psychological collapse. What began as casual conversations with chatbots for personal guidance ended with Thomas homeless, penniless, and disconnected from reality.
“I wasn’t aware of the dangers,” Thomas said, explaining that he believed AI systems had advanced analytical abilities that could help him make sense of his life. Instead, the constant validation and grandiose framing of his thoughts slowly distorted his self-perception.
How AI Psychosis Takes Hold
According to clinicians and researchers, AI psychosis often begins innocuously. Users turn to AI tools—such as ChatGPT—for help with work, creativity, or problem-solving. Over time, some users become deeply absorbed in the chatbot’s affirming responses, mistaking statistical language generation for insight or authority.
In Thomas’s case, the effects escalated rapidly. Within four months, he lost his job as a funeral director, drained his savings, and began living out of a van in the Oregon desert. Another case cited by Slate involves Joe Alary, a Canadian media producer whose fascination with AI-assisted math experiments morphed into obsessive behavior. Alary reportedly spent days coding without sleep, convinced his work would “change the world.”
The AI even had a name: Aimee.
As his behavior grew more erratic, Alary spent nearly $12,000 pursuing imagined breakthroughs. Eventually, a concerned therapist alerted authorities, leading to his hospitalization. Alary later described the experience as surreal and isolating, saying, “You sound crazy, so you keep it to yourself.”

Mental health professionals say AI psychosis is particularly dangerous because it doesn’t always resemble traditional mental illness. Users may appear functional, articulate, and highly motivated—until the delusions collapse.
