Amazon has announced plans to invest an additional 18 billion euros ($21 billion) in Spain to expand its data centre infrastructure and accelerate artificial intelligence development, the company confirmed on Monday at MWC26 Barcelona. The new commitment raises Amazon’s total planned investment in the country to 33.7 billion euros ($39.8 billion), marking the largest technology investment the company has ever made in Spain — and coinciding with its 15th anniversary of operations there.​

A Major Boost for Spain’s Digital Economy

The latest funding round adds to the €15.7 billion investment already announced in 2024 for the AWS Europe (Spain) Region, located in the autonomous community of Aragón. Together, the cumulative investment is now estimated to contribute €31.7 billion to Spain’s total GDP through 2035 and support approximately 29,900 full-time equivalent jobs annually in local businesses — nearly double the 17,500 jobs projected under the previous investment plan.

Beyond direct employment, the investment will generate thousands of positions in construction, cloud operations, cybersecurity, and AI services. Amazon noted that 6,700 of those jobs will be full-time positions directly from its own investment, encompassing data centre operations staff and employees of Amazon’s construction and security suppliers.​

Aragón: Spain’s Cloud and AI Heartland

Amazon’s AWS Europe (Spain) Region, launched in Aragón in November 2022, serves as the anchor for the entire investment strategy. The new expansion will extend data centre facilities into all three provinces of Aragón — Huesca, Zaragoza, and Teruel — making Amazon the first technology company to announce plans for data centres in the province of Teruel.​

As part of the expansion, Amazon also plans to build new supply chain facilities in Aragón to support data centre operations across Spain and Europe. These facilities will include a server manufacturing plant for assembly and testing, a manufacturing fulfilment warehouse, and a dedicated AI and machine learning server manufacturing and repair facility — a key part of Amazon’s circular economy strategy. Once fully operational, these supply chain facilities alone are expected to create approximately 1,800 jobs in the region.​

Powering the AI Infrastructure Race

The investment directly responds to surging demand for AI-powered cloud services across Europe. Amazon Web Services (AWS) stated that the expanded capacity will support growing enterprise adoption of cloud computing, advanced AI workloads, and digital transformation initiatives for organisations of all sizes across Spain and the broader European market.

“We’re supporting Europe’s digital capabilities and expanding cloud and AI infrastructure that businesses and organisations are already using to grow and innovate,” Amazon said in a statement. “This is a long-term bet on Spain, and we’re proud to make it.”​

Community and Sustainability Commitments

Beyond infrastructure, Amazon has pledged €30 million in community programmes across Spain through 2035. The company also highlighted plans to advance water stewardship and promote carbon-free energy projects as part of the broader investment package, aligning the expansion with Spain’s sustainability goals.​

Spain’s Digital Transformation Minister José Luis Escrivá previously welcomed AWS’s commitment, stating that Amazon’s decision “places us at the forefront of technology innovation and Artificial Intelligence in Europe”. The latest announcement is expected to further cement Spain — and Aragón in particular — as one of the most strategically important cloud computing and AI hubs on the continent.
